He also killed other animals and is suspected of harming horses as well.

WE. need. To . Hospitalize..people. involuntarily!

Between this and the guy in Arlington who blew up the duplex I am seriously concerned about how we allow dangerous mentally ill people to just roam free.

It's been going on for decades. Honestly, if I were raving mad I'd rather be cared for than left to rave in the streets... How is this a "kindness"??????

You can thank Ronald Reagan for the free range mentally ill.

That has been proven time and again categorically false.

Jesus. Anyone know anything about the victim? Sort of sounds like a personal dispute maybe between two homeless guys or possible a drug related dispute. How awful. The mental health situation is really terrible. I think there’s a few different factors contributing but we definitely need a better approach.

Nope, just regular old garden variety unchecked severe and violent mental illness. He was already known to police for attacking businesses and apparently also attacked or threatened animals at a farm. Honestly, the fact that he stabbed a dog is probably the best outcome considering how it could have easily been a person randomly killed instead.

Thank God he was only threatening to hurt animals.
Thank God he was only destroying screens in drive thrus.
Thank God he was only killing ducks.
Thank God he was only killing dogs.

I assume we are done tolerating or do we need to wait for a more violent event?

Thank God someone beat the absolute S out of him and put him in intensive care for months.
What I prefer to have happen.

A walking stick or a baton would be better for this purpose. (Batons are legal in Virginia but not in DC.)

How do you protect yourself in DC?

Close your eyes and think of England.

Be real. He broke the drive thru menu screen at a McDonald's and some glass entrance doors. Those aren't really "lock 'em up" crimes.

They should be

It's a good argument for broken windows policing.

He's mentally ill, and clearly needs more care. It's not to punish him but to enable him to function.

Why are you people so afraid to say that he needs punishment for these actions?

What's the point of punishment? To teach someone a lesson? If they are mentally ill, they may never be able to grasp that lesson. So caring for them is more appropriate.

Either way, people like this need to be removed from society until they are stable, because other people have a right to be safe.

Have we tried giving him free housing so that he has time to work on understanding how society is plotting against him?

I know you’re being sarcastic, but this is a good time to remind everyone that the severely mentally ill homeless (which, this guy wasn’t homeless as far as I know) can’t and/or don’t want to keep a home. You give them an apartment, they trash it and end up back on the streets because their addictions and problems are too severe.

For the love of God please bring back mental institutions already. I’ll gladly pay more in taxes if that means we can get these people off the streets and into treatment programs for mental illness and drug addiction.

But husbands will use it to get their wives committed so they can marry the secretary. Is that what you want?

“Collateral damage”, regrettably.

Surely we can find the line between BS “my wife is so crazy” and “stabbing multiple animals and lighting people on fire” crazy.

How do we get our politicians to do this? Currently, the law highly favors them being allowed to refuse care and meander along doing mentally ill things that impact their safety and others. We would need more beds and mental health practitioners, AND a sea change in the laws. Where to start????
