Anyone else hate soda but a Diet Coke hits the spot every once in a while?

Same. Diet is horrible

I'm the opposite. I hate the slimy, fuzzy slick of sugar or whatever it is on my teeth from regular coke. Almost makes them hurt.

I like Cherry Coke Zero and Diet Dr. Pepper. I used to drink sodas daily, but now I only have 1-2 a week.

If you find the act of drinking a Diet Coke enjoyable, then "tastes like something enjoyable."

You are being weird about this. There's nothing wrong with enjoying soda. There are health reasons someone might choose not to drink it, or to limit how much they drink, but it's a sweet, fizzy beverage that was scientifically formulated to be enjoyable. You enjoy it. You're just like everyone else!

I don’t enjoy it enough to buy a case and stock it at home.

That's different from "I hate soda." You like soda, you just don't drink it very often.

People use soda as a class signifier. That's what is actually happening here. You don't think of yourself as the type of person who drinks soda (poor, uneducated, unhealthy) so you claim to hate it, but actually you like it. And that's why you crave it occasionally and then drink it and enjoy drinking it.

As for as class signifier, Diet Coke is probably on the upper echelon, with it seems mostly affluent people drinking it? My doctor drinks it, it seemed like all of my professors in college drank it, my super wealthy boss drinks it, my husband's lawyer buddies drink it. It's not embarrassing to drink it or be seen drinking it, I truly just enjoy it every once in a while. I think it would get gross drinking it every day.

Trump drinks Diet Coke and he’s as trashy as you can get.

Saying that speaks more about you than it does about either Turnip or diet coke. I'm not a fan of Turnip personally but given that all the upscale supermarkets and groceries and delis in my affluent neck of the woods sell diet coke, and that I see diet cokes and even regular cokes in houses of affluent professionals around me, this attempt to link soda to class is a bit bizarre. And I even like to drink diet coke.

Agree with the pp who commented about her husband's law partners all drinking diet coke. I don't doubt that young people in their 20s may not drink as much soda as older generations, but I'm in my 40s and it's definitely not uncommon for successful professionals to enjoy their diet cokes.

I was not aware drinking Diet Coke is some class signifier. I have one with lunch daily, and I don’t think I’m trashy?

Now Mountain Dew is a different conversation…

Also hate regular Coke—seems flatter to me.

Love Diet with lots of ice.

I do like diet Coke but objectively understand that the taste is something not exactly pleasant? Kind of like how I like campari even though it is bitter. But, I have switched to Coke Zero because the chemicals in it don't make me bloat as much as the ones in diet coke. I used to be addicted, but now it is maybe once a week or so.

LOL about the class comment! I have switched to espresso tonics, but enjoy a good diet Coke occassionally. Great with pizza.

I eat very healthy and have an overall healthy lifestyle. And a crisp fountain Diet Coke is a vice I’ll carry til the day I die. I have one almost daily.

Me too, except only when I'm in Europe with a slice of lemon. Not sure why I never crave it anywhere else....maybe it tastes different there or they serve it in smaller glasses so it's not as overwhelming?

+1 I can’t stand anything with aspartame/splenda/stevia whatever.

Guess you have never tried A&W Zero Rootbeer.

Yes, and it tastes awful. It contains aspartame.

That's the only diet/sugar free soda that doesn't taste like aspartame. The only one I've tried them all. Orange soda it the worst a&w the best!!!

Definitely diminishing returns; gets gross the more I drink. 12oz can is max. Those 7.5oz little cans are also excellent.

The coke recipe is different for different countries/markets.
A coke in the USA tastes different than a coke in South Africa.

Stevia isn't a chemical.
