If you get a craving for a Diet Coke regularly, you don't hate soda. If you find the act of drinking a Diet Coke enjoyable, then "tastes like something enjoyable." You are being weird about this. There's nothing wrong with enjoying soda. There are health reasons someone might choose not to drink it, or to limit how much they drink, but it's a sweet, fizzy beverage that was scientifically formulated to be enjoyable. You enjoy it. You're just like everyone else!
I don’t enjoy it enough to buy a case and stock it at home.
That's different from "I hate soda." You like soda, you just don't drink it very often. People use soda as a class signifier. That's what is actually happening here. You don't think of yourself as the type of person who drinks soda (poor, uneducated, unhealthy) so you claim to hate it, but actually you like it. And that's why you crave it occasionally and then drink it and enjoy drinking it.
As for as class signifier, Diet Coke is probably on the upper echelon, with it seems mostly affluent people drinking it? My doctor drinks it, it seemed like all of my professors in college drank it, my super wealthy boss drinks it, my husband's lawyer buddies drink it. It's not embarrassing to drink it or be seen drinking it, I truly just enjoy it every once in a while. I think it would get gross drinking it every day.
Trump drinks Diet Coke and he’s as trashy as you can get.
Saying that speaks more about you than it does about either Turnip or diet coke. I'm not a fan of Turnip personally but given that all the upscale supermarkets and groceries and delis in my affluent neck of the woods sell diet coke, and that I see diet cokes and even regular cokes in houses of affluent professionals around me, this attempt to link soda to class is a bit bizarre. And I even like to drink diet coke. Agree with the pp who commented about her husband's law partners all drinking diet coke. I don't doubt that young people in their 20s may not drink as much soda as older generations, but I'm in my 40s and it's definitely not uncommon for successful professionals to enjoy their diet cokes.
