Tweens and Teens
Teens don’t always make good decisions. Now, with weed becoming more legal, that will also lead to issues, IMO. |
It’s easy to think you’re not impaired when you’ve had 1 or 2 drinks, especially for inexperienced drinkers. Kids need to know that they should never drive if they have any amount of alcohol (or drugs). |
Stop referring to collisions as accidents. An accident is something that can’t be avoided. This incident could have been prevented. |
THIS! Parents, why do you do this? I know so many people who drink and drive. Most with their children in the car. Then they’re all surprised when something bad happens. |
lol, no. The person going the speed limit, but having a conversation on their phone, is a far, FAR more dangerous driver than the person going 10 over, but actually fully present and focused on the road and their surroundings. Impaired and distracted driving is incredibly risky. And of course, a teenager who doesn't have decades of driving experience under their belt, overestimates their invincibility. |

This is an awful nightmare for everyone involved. My 13yr old is years away from driving but 8th graders start experimenting so I talked to him about this yesterday. I want it drilled into his head by the time he’s that age to never drink and drive or get in a car with someone who is.
Tragedy for both families especially the young man who was killed. |
There was no mention of a passenger. |
I think they mean the other teen passengers in the drunk drivers car. |
| It should be mandatory for underage drivers to have a breath alcohol interlock device in any car they drive. |
We always had one sober parent. My oldest 17 and even if we only have one drink with a big meal we make a point of handing him the keys and saying we had a drink you are driving, etc. He is a serious athlete with zero interest in drinking (at least yet). But we want to lead by example. My dad also drilled into our heads that even if we do t injure ourselves or others - duis are serious. Even the slightest bit over and you think you are fine- you will be charged, it’s a big fine, you will temporarily lose your license and it’s on your record. |
Agreed. If adults serve alcohol to teens at their house or an event they host, then if those teens drive drunk and harm anyone or cause property damage, those adults should be jointly liable. Across the board. |

There should be required education in schools regarding drunk driving AND being a passenger in a car with someone who is drunk.
All teens should have a number to get a ride if their peer is suspected being drunk. |
There is. And I’m sure these kids “had a number” to call. Let’s not pretend it so easy to stop these tragedies. |
The education class on drunk driving, etc. is already required in Virginia for both students and parents. In fact, you can’t get your license without at least one parent and the student attending this session. It’s usually held at the school in the evening several times a year. |
Yes. Sorry to burst your bubble. On a neighborhood road, with the speed limit being 25/30 and you’re trying to justify going 40/45?! Nope. That’s how people die. People who do NOT speed are much less likely to get in any accident. And every accident is made worse with speed. Teach your kids too. Clearly alcohol was a player here too, but if this kid hasn’t been speeding he wouldn’t have hit the other child. Also, see the horrific Oakton accident in June. No alcohol, only speed. |
