NP. You know that most of them can’t do that. White folks always trying to dissect other groups at the same time they commit genocide around the world. They never own their shit, so they pivot and attempt to gaslight other groups. I know, sis. I’m so sick of it. |
It still took him, George Michael, eighteen years and that was only because he was outed. WHAM “wake me up” success was 1980. And he would not hAve come clean about his homosexuality in 1998 but for his arrest for male solicitation. So stop with the bullshit. You say Elton, I say, BFD. Elton was not a heartthrob crooner, however Johnny MAthis was. I recall my mother drooling over Johnny while listening to his him sing “Chances Are”. And yes, she always knew or suspected he was gay. |
I know, sis. I’m so sick of it. Facts. Always quoting stats on other groups. |

I was a teen in 1993 and I was a huge Tevin Campbell aficionado. I had his albums as well as his poster above my bed. My favorite songs by him were of course Can We Talk but I also loved I’m Ready as well as Round and Round.
I think his career would not have been affected too bad if he publicly came out as a gay kid. Because at that time his music was legendary as was his incomparable talent and voice. People would have been more focused on his songs vs. what his sexual orientation was. Looking back I wonder if Quincy, Prince, Michael or even Babyface were privy to the fact that he was gay. Maybe they told Tevin to stay inside the proverbial closet and if that is the case, I can see Tevin listening to them as these guys were the most powerful men in music back then. |

^^ So wrong. There is no way any teen heartthrob black, white or orange would have ever been able to be a musical success if they publicly stated that they were homosexual.
Tevin would have been canceled before the term in its current context before he would get nominated for his next Grammy. Imagine if in 1992 to 1994 Tevin would have been seen dating guys…..!?? Look at what happened to Ellen DeGeneres when she came out. She lost a huge fan base and had her comedy series get canceled. It would be unheard of today. Tevin was right to keep his mouth shut about his sexual orientation however in 1999 (?) when he got busted for soliciting a Male hooker his secret was pretty much out then. I recently saw him on a live podcast and he was wearing black nail polish and some of his mannerisms could have been mistaken for gay. But Pete Davidson wore black nail polish too so my gaydar is actually very amateur level. Lol. |
| Well he hasn’t been a teenager in decades. |
| I love Tevin Campbell and am happy that he’s living his best life. He’s a great singer. I loved that era of music. |
Right, just think about all of the teen heartthrobs that were in the closet back then - Ricky Martin, Jon Knight, Lance Bass…Part of their appeal is that young girls fantasize the guys are singing to them. It’s like that classic episode of Fresh Prince of Bel Air when Tevin Campbell serenaded Ashley. That fantasy doesn’t work if the singer is openly gay. Contrast this with someone like Luther Vandross who everyone knew was gay but still loved. Women weren’t lusting after him, rather his music was perfect for couples and lovers to appreciate together, so his sexuality didn’t matter. |
I didn't know he was gay until much later. |
| I didn’t know Luther va dross was gay until I read this. My mind is blown |
I always thought he was gay. I'm also 53. |
