This is exactly what I said to my husband. We understand that a man is being castrated without showing a bloody penis after, good grief. I feel the same as others about the gratutitous sex and violence, but the actual storytelling seems okay so far. The actress who plays Rhanerya annoys me, which could become a problem.

The good news is that a different actress will play her as an older version. I don't find this actress attractive. She's strange looking. Reminds me of Chaka in Land of the Lost. I felt like she held her own in the scenes with Matt Smith and set up a very complicated relationship there, but overall she's little and not very regal. A Lyanna Mormont she is not.

I finished the first episode and the commentary stuff was playing in the background. The show runners were trying to make the point the Daemon (Matt Smith) isn't a monster, and my reaction to that was, what? Because he seems pretty monstrous even if he is sometimes nice to his niece - a relationship that's beneficial to the both of them if you are a transactional person.

I'm also loving the very The Other Boleyn Girl/Lady Jane Grey setup of the Hightowers even if I was slightly disappointed that Alicent went so readily when her father asked.

I will likely stick with it. I am also glad that not so much is made of the dragons.

Can you explain this more? I am familiar with the Boleyns and Jane Grey but don't see how their stories could be related to HOTD.

PP here - basically pushing your daughter in front of the king without much regard to propriety in order to advance your family's interest. Or to be crass - pimping out your daughter for power.

We’ll be watching it. If you were a fan of GoT or watch The Boys, the violence is NBD. HBO has never shrunk from showing violence or sex in its series.

(1) I thought white walkers were defeated after Dany died. There was not a Targaryen on the throne. Plot issue?

Isn't that what happened though?

The Mad King, who was on the throne before Baratheon and shortly before the GoT storyline picks up, was Targaryen.

The White Walkers did exist and Winter came by them crossing over the wall. They were defeated shortly after, but it did happen.

It's a completely separate show. You will feel lost but only because you didn't read the book, not because you need to know what happens in GoT. There is a lot of information you can find on the internet too.

I think its worth watching. You might miss out of some of the subtle overlap but I don't think that's necessary.

I hear this show is doing some numbers, but apparently not on DCUM

I just watched the second episode. Better than the first even if it was a little slow. It really set out some major history and statecraft stuff, which I like.

Rhaenyra is a great character. I'm still not crazy about the actress, but at least she's given interesting storylines.

The King can't get out of his own way. I won't spoil what happens, but even though his decision pissed people off, the alternative was BLECH, so...

I will watch this as a miniseries/limited series, but I am not sure I would do multiple seasons of it. It's spurred me to re-watch Game of Thrones and you realize what an amazing series that was for so long, and then *poof.* Can't over-invest.
