Our school has an elaborate phased *outdoor* unmasking policy over a period of weeks. It’s a waste of resources. And parents must still mask up outdoors. Only in DC… I’d be OK if that were the indoor unmasking plan but nope that’s not even on the table yet.

Serious question: What would actually happen if a parent was outside and unmasked? Would they punish the student?

I’m pretty sure they would politely remind me to put on a mask. There’s 100% compliance so it would be weird.

I don't think they have the authority to require masks in the school building.
I understand there is peer pressure but by no means does any school administrator have authority over the mayor and the chancellor.

We’re listed as low by CDC, and I’m not sure when the school population will ever feel more comfortable with out masks. What is the metric for when masks will be gone? They haven’t said, and so there’s no light at the end of the tunnel. It’s a no win situation for the school, but I’m personally just getting frustrated by how much we’re going on feeling rather than relying on CDC.

Probably once vaccines are available for under-5s. I imagine once that significant chunk of the student body can be vaccinated (and I suppose if over-5 vax rates increase too), you'll see the numbers of parents and staff ready to ditch masks inside go way up.

The goal post keep moving. It’s absurd - allow choice. The PK classes don’t make up a significant portion and by now a good # of PK 4 kids are eligible.

So inclusive of you.

I pick up and drop off at ITDS. There was a time with 100% compliance with parents masking outside 6 feet away from each other. More and more parents are dropping the nonsense.

I stopped masking outside at pick up but still see the majority of parents outside with their heavy duty masks. It’s ridiculous at this point

Maybe they were tearing down some asbestos and forget they had them on?

The WHO doesn’t recommend a mask for children under 6. And the double dose series was ineffective for kids under 5. To wait for a vaccine for that age group is absurd, it may not come.

I stopped masking outside at pickup and drop off like 5 months ago and no one seems to give a crap.

I would wager about 90% of parents still wear masks at pickup. I found it outrageously selfish and obnoxious when parents don't - your kids have to wear masks all day and you can't wear them for 2 minutes for pickup? Ridiculous.

I find it outrageously misguided that anyone thinks outdoor masking of vaccinated adults makes any difference whatsoever. But you do you.

This is the kind of performance of liberal pieties that makes people roll their eyes at ITS parents.

Do you mind sharing what school?

I see something similar coming from ours. We are still in the surveying teachers and parents phase but every Covid related things has been complicated and confusing as possible. The reopening, phased in, hybrid plan of last year was especially nuts.
