Hockey is the only sport that is interesting, yet countries can't even use their best players anymore. It is a boring amateur fest of hockey.

The Winter Olympics is more visually appealing. Can't beat the beauty of snowy mountains.

Plus I love the teams from warm/tropical countries that still manage to send one or a handful of athletes. I root for them so hard!

I agree that the Russian dolls are doing some incredible things ( the quads! The overhead arms! The artistry!) but you gotta know there’s a huge dark side to their current domination. The way they are going through these girls so quickly, only to have them retire as depressed eating disordered young women when their bodies start to mature in their later teens.

It reminds me of how dominant the American gymnastics program has been for the last 10 years or so, only to be hiding rampant emotional and sexual abuse just underneath the surface.

I am FROM Russia so no lectures are needed. Figure skating is the sport for the young under the current system. And it's not like people like Lipinski or Hughes have set a record for longevity, know what I'm sayin'? The professional figure skating circuit in Russia is huge and lucrative so I don't blame the skaters for putting in the work, collecting the medals and getting out quickly to enjoy the rest of their lives.

At least they don't retire to the lifetime of obscurity, cough cough.

Under the Russian and Chinese systems, children are basically taken from their families early to be used for the glory of the system. And yes, they are putting a ton of stress on these young girls. It might be amazing the stunts they can do, but they are being chewed up and spit out.

I understand why the point system was revamped (and I may just pay peacock $5 to finish that documentary about the 2002 scandal) but it takes a lot of the joy out of skating when you are just trying to squeeze in as many points as possible. (Same can be said of gymnastics, actually-I miss the gymnastics of the 80s and 90s)

So much is given up in the pursuit of glory for the homeland.

Now you're being silly and jealous. I don't know how they do things in China but I assure you that no one takes children away from their families early in Russia. Figure skating happens to be a popular sport with a strong cadre of teachers and many, many, many willing athletes. They are free to walk away at any time. People who stay, stay willingly. The line to get into Sambo (Eteri Tutberidze's skating school responsible the current crop) is ten blocks long.

But I understand it's more comforting for you to paint this as a dark shadowy world of the evil Russians instead of just admitting, hey, these people have figured out what works. That's why the story of an American girl skater whose family had to split up because the right coach lives on a different coast, whose parents are remortgaging the house to find fifty thousand a year it takes to keep a child in elite skating, who is homeschooled and has to get up at 5 am to get her ice time in before public skating sessions and hockey players start pummeling the ice, is the heroic story of personal perseverance and "voluntary" sacrifice in the name of the Wheaties box. But a Russian skater who puts in a comparable amount of effort and sacrifice but has the advantage of state-marshaled resources- well, she simply MUST be forced by the state.

After watching Icarus, it's hard to take any wins seriously. Especially Russian wins, but virtually everyone's a cheater.

Oh please. There were just as many dull skaters under the old system.

No one was lecturing. Don’t be so sensitive, we’re having a conversation. I agree the Russian figure skating program
Is doing some phenomenal work right now, and it super fun to watch, but I won’t be one bit surprised in a few years when it starts leaking out how much it’s screwing these girls up. Just like USA gymnastics. There’s a price to pay for that level of greatness.

Yup.

Hell, even basketball in China does too. Many people don't know that Yao was the product of a forced govt marriage between two people that were told by the state to produce a kid because the govt thought the parents had the right genetics to produce a viable basketball playing offspring. People really do not understand that these kinds of states love to try to project soft power through sports victories. They have to intervene to try to win.

This is simply wrong. You have no idea wtf you are spouting off about

If you think that one cannot reach the top spot in this sport without getting screwed up, then you should definitely campaign to have these sports banned.

If there was a drug that helps you jump off the ice, rotate four times in the air and land on one foot with the other extended behind you, everyone would be taking it.

What does that have to do with systemic doping and 43 medals stripped

Nice how you overlooked doping to aid in recovery, endurance, strength, and healing.

Doping doesn't mean magical transformation. But it means giving you an unnatural leg up, which is what pretty much the entire Russian team did in Sochi.

That said, sports these days are a farce. The Russians are excessive, but everyone's doing it. Sadly.
