So looking forward to the ladies skating event for the Russian girls. They developed a fabulous talent pipeline over the last ten years. That’s what happens when you don’t need to worry about ice time!
I agree that the Russian dolls are doing some incredible things ( the quads! The overhead arms! The artistry!) but you gotta know there’s a huge dark side to their current domination. The way they are going through these girls so quickly, only to have them retire as depressed eating disordered young women when their bodies start to mature in their later teens. It reminds me of how dominant the American gymnastics program has been for the last 10 years or so, only to be hiding rampant emotional and sexual abuse just underneath the surface.
I am FROM Russia so no lectures are needed. Figure skating is the sport for the young under the current system. And it's not like people like Lipinski or Hughes have set a record for longevity, know what I'm sayin'? The professional figure skating circuit in Russia is huge and lucrative so I don't blame the skaters for putting in the work, collecting the medals and getting out quickly to enjoy the rest of their lives. At least they don't retire to the lifetime of obscurity, cough cough.
No one was lecturing. Don’t be so sensitive, we’re having a conversation. I agree the Russian figure skating program Is doing some phenomenal work right now, and it super fun to watch, but I won’t be one bit surprised in a few years when it starts leaking out how much it’s screwing these girls up. Just like USA gymnastics. There’s a price to pay for that level of greatness.
If you think that one cannot reach the top spot in this sport without getting screwed up, then you should definitely campaign to have these sports banned.
