There are skills in music too and that's what they grade.  There are national and state standards just like there are national standards for reading, math, science, social studies, visual art etc.  Just because you think music should just be "fun" doesn't mean that's how education works.  You sound like you are conveying your own biases to your kids (and, no, I'm not a music teacher).  A lot of people want their kids to have a solid foundation in the arts--as well as enjoyment.  It's something I value about FCPS--they have a strong music, art and (once you start MS) theater program. [/quote]
