Why is RMIB selective and the others not? |
It's an established program known historically for academic excellence and great teachers. The other programs are new, and finding their footing. Many think RMIB will eventually become a regional center like the others once they're more established. |
RMIB is the only "county-wide" selective IB program, so it is harder to get into than the regional programs. I don't know why they haven't turned RMIB into a regional program--that was the original plan, but it never happened. Before regional IB programs were set up, RM had more HL courses (and more courses in general) than local IB programs. I don't know if this is still true. You'll have to look at course catalogs for individual high schools. RMIB has a very high diploma rate compared to local IB programs (regional programs haven't been around long enough to even graduate a class), so if getting the diploma is important to you and your kid, RMIB has a high success rate on making this happen. |
I agree. At least one regional IB program had trouble filling spots and sent emails asking students to reconsider applying. Despite the regional IB programs, RMIB still has many more applicants. Acceptance rates have historically been around 10%, although I’m not sure of the number for this year. With those numbers, the program can attract and accept stronger students which results in higher IB diploma rates. |
When they announced the regional programs, I remember thinking that was their plan and expected them to add regional STEM programs in a year or two as well. I guess COVID put that on pause and at this point they've probably already moved on to some shiny new scheme. |
The county has grown so much since these programs were introduced, and since there's far more qualified applicants than there are seats, this would make sense so probably too much to expect of MCPS. |
| Does RMIB offer shadow day for the accepted students? Any other events besides 2/15’s info session? |
Where is this information available? |
