What's your secret weapon "non recipe"

Anonymous
I know you have one... So spill it here.

I often make shredded carrot salad. There is nothing.. As in Absolutely, positively, solidly, nothing special about it. It is shredded carrots with fresh chopped herbs, salt, pepper, olive oil and lemon.

Sometimes I get crazy add add something like cumin or chopped almonds/pistachios, but really that's it.

Every.single. time. I make it for a group, I get raves. I always feel like "c'mon folks, it's chopped carrots. The hostess made some 469 ingredient, sourced special spices, 4 day process chicken extravaganza which was amazing, and you want the recipe for carrots?

I'm not sure if it's a function that people only know whole carrots, cooked carrots, and baby carrots with dip, but I'm always confused by this.

Of course I never give out the recipe because now it's my secret dish.

I know everyone has one - a recipe non Recipe that makes them look magical. My best pal makes a rice salad that really comes down to rice, frozen peas, and dill that is her "dish" .( It truly is an amazing salad though.)

So what's yours?

Baked eggs in muffin tins. If I want to go extra fancy, I will do a fun garnish, or mix in some chopped ham, or sprinkle with cheese, but they are just eggs in muffin tins. For some reason people devour them. Go figure.

I think you have to actually share yours first if you want others to give you theirs...

One time at a casual party I made a huge tray of little sandwiches on cocktail bread. You know, the loaves that looks like shrunken down real loaves. I had something like turkey and swiss, ham and cheddar, and two-cheese. Toothpick in each. Bowls of pickles and condiments on the side. People went NUTS. Especially men. Magical tiny bread!

Nope: "Of course I never give out the recipe because now it's my secret dish."

Ice cream sandwiches.

Slice and bake chocolate chip cookies, made slightly larger than I'd normally do. Cool. Scoop chocolate chip ice cream in between two cookies. Wrap in waxed paper. Freeze. I've made these for neighborhood parties and these are always a huge hit. If you are really pressed for time, buy bakery (soft) chocolate chip cookies. If you have extra time, roll finished sandwich through a bowl of sprinkles before wrapping.

Umm.. OP here.

Maybe you got confused on the comprehension, because my secret recipe is carrots with herbs? Then again, it is a non recipe so it's easy to miss.

18:40. Back again to say that I make nothing complicated!

Just did this for a party and there we zero leftovers:

Marinated mozzarella balls (small balls, from Costco) and mini cherry tomatoes, speared on a toothpick. Drizzled with marinade that is packaged with cheese). You can be a bit fancier and add tiny sliced pieces of basil or go bigger and do larger mozzarella balls and cherry tomatoes on a 1/2 size skewer.

Delicious! I'm copying you! Can you give me the specifics? How long in oven? How many do you usually make? If you are taking these for a brunch, would you include bread?

Chimmichurri sauce. Easiest thing ever to make but everyone raves about it. I actually had a chef friend ask me for my recipe. There is none. Just a list of ingredients that I mix together until it tastes right.

Velveeta dip or as my mom always called it growing up "chile con queso" - it's literally melted Velveeta, rotel or salsa, and browned ground beef. It's not classy but it is always a huge hit at parties.
