Most seem to think he is stupid, acted badly, got robbed, omitted details, and Brazil has handled this terribly.

Then there is a contingent that is basically like:

And can't seem to have a nuanced discussion about this.

Right?! I feel like there is a contingent of posters who, upon hearing, say, that Lochte was tortured and abandoned on the side of a deserted road, would take the occasion to remind us for the hundredth time what a white, entitled, arrogant douchebag he is.

How weird that you are focusing on his race--no one else is.

I think that was Singapore.
I don’t agree that caning is an appropriate punishment for this particular “crime.”

So is Lochte

Oh what if he was "hard" and from the city it would be different?

Maybe he wouldn't have been so weak and make up a lame story about saying "whatever" to a cocked gun pressed to his forehead hahahahahah

They should extradite Lochte and he should be publically caned. Totally.

I've been trying to figure out why the story changed so much, but when I watch the video it's pretty clear that they're wasted and probably can't remember exactly what happened. Then there are the reports of camera footage of them returning to their residence seemingly unfazed. I've been mugged and can recall how I was relieved I was that the whole thing was over. I think they were drunk and may or may not have done something worthy of penalty. People who observed their state (in the video, there were several men standing around watching them as they went into the restroom and came out) saw an opportunity and took it. The swimmers couldn't remember what they'd done, couldn't process what was happening, felt ashamed then relieved to be out of there. The story got muddled in the retelling.

I'm sure Brazilian police see this happening all the time, but this time it was in international press and they had to save face. Except now they've made the situation a hundred times worse than it needed to be. The people they're accusing had left the country or were about to, without pressing charges.

This. It's been years since I was going out, getting wasted, and possibly doing stupid shit. I will say that Lochte needs to grow up. Unbecoming in a grown man. Maybe it's time to get a real job.

He has a real job. He's an Olympic swimmer. Would you say that Phelps needs to "get a real job"?

Did you just drop into this thread and start making definitive proclamations about it? Sounds so very entitled of you.

Hint: Look for posts featuring the words "white privilege" (or "white privelege," as the case may be).

Usain Bolt and Ryan Lochte have the same arrogant attitude but somehow with Ryan this ends up a cute story about a little boy lost and robbed (depending on who you ask) in Rio. If this had been Usain Bolt he would be crucified, vilified and everyone would be saying how terrible of a crime and person he is.

I've been here since the beginning--early on there was one poster, yes. That's it. I'm white-Swedish American. You sound crazy. Paranoid really.

Er, no. Usain Bolt is universally loved. He's not a swim bro, he's a larger-than-life enjoying life star.

He is Cuban, so he is Hispanic. Not a race, but everyone is making him out to be some preppy WASP.

I didn't know that. I guess I was thrown by the hair.

Okay, thanks for the nice little narrative you made up and shared with us to reinforce your beliefs. (Meanwhile, IRL, people are accusing one of the blandest, least offensive celebrities in the nation - Ellen DeGeneres - of racism for making a Bolt joke, despite the fact that Bolt himself retweeted it. I think Bolt isn't currently being too oppressed.)

(Personally, I think Bolt is way too smart to ever find himself in Lochte's predicament. How do you not see that? What could be blinding you to it?)
