It's not proof. But if it is repeated, it certainly should be a red flag that warrants for inquiry by the school.

I have reported repeated MD tags before (have never seen VA ones at our school) and will continue to do so if I see them. It is for the school to then work out what is going on, but we all play a part in trying to make sure that those with a legit excuse have that officially recorded (which also protects the school if anyone challenges them on whether they "knew" someone was not a DC resident - if they are a DC resident or have a custody situation, that can be documented).

And those who do not have a legit excuse, the sooner they are busted the better. A DC kid should be in their slot, especially at the hard to get into schools. That is who the slots are meant for, and no extensive sob story of other circumstances changes that. Either you are a DC kid, or you're not, and if you are your family can prove it. If you're not, you knew you were bending the rules, you got busted, so now you have to figure that out.

Busted, and DCPS or the charter board should charge the parents. At least they should bring a civil action to recover back tuition.

Completely agree.

Or they live in DC and are ducking DC taxes by keeping their cars registered in MD (where there is no inspection/personal property tax obligation). I have a coworker who lives in my neighborhood in the VA 'burbs and still has MD tags on her car (it's been more than a year since she moved to VA).

Call the county and tell them. It's not fair for her to dodge taxes like that. You can just call up and give them her name & address and they'll send her a letter.

Some people have no shame, it's sort of scary. DH was telling me about how the secretary in his office was just busted for tax evasion because she had been claiming the senior homestead exemption on her mother's DC home even after her mom had died (and therefore the homeowner was not eligible to receive it anymore). While DC govt was investigating, they also discovered years of rental income on which taxes were never paid. On top of it all, the secretary said that when she was a child, her family had moved to PG county but lo and behold she still attended DC schools.

Now, why would anyone admit all of that I have no idea, but it goes to show that this kind of cheating has no stigma attached to it.

This thread is funny. I thought if you reside in the district and pay DC taxes, your child is eligible to attend DCPSs. If a legit parent has an out of state plate, then that's between DMV and the parent. Or for whatever reason they have their plates.

And so are over 90% of these posts. Huffing and puffing over dumb sh*t like there aren't bigger issues going on in the world. People need to get a life. Or a better hobby to keep their brains occupied.

New to the thread and Bethesda parent. One quick question please because I don't get it. Why on earth would anyone possibly lie to send their kid to DC public (or charter) schools? I paid 7 figures not to send my kid there. Literally every single person I have ever spoke to did/feels the same, what possible insentive would parents have?

That says a lot about you and the crowd you hang out with. For people who can't afford Bethesda and seven-figures DCPS is their best option.

I live in a neighborhood where the local school has come under serious scrutiny for out of state tags, MD of course. This is a gentrifyang area with a school that has had a lot of pressure and achievement in a short time. I drove past what might be one of the top two or three NW elementare schools and !! Shock!! Saw tons of MD plates. Way more than what is in our school down the street. It made me laugh. Good to know it happens everywhere. Damn are these people driving far for this school.

Because they don't live in Bethesda. Duh.

Well, let's see. My friend's Montgomery County kindergarten student is in a class of 28 kids with one teacher and no aide. There are 10 kindergarten classes in the school. She has had little to no interaction with any other parents/kids at the school. The aftercare is terrible.

In my DCPS, my kid is one of 19 in her class with one teacher and one aide. There are two classes per grade. We know almost every other parent in both classes and have a great PTA community. My kid has options of language, dance, yoga, karate, computer programming, and about 10 other activities in her after school program.

So there's that.

There's also the fact that most MD people who are lying to get in don't live in Bethesda and certainly didn't pay 7 figures for their McMansions.

How's the weather out there in Landover this evening?

I think someone said it best in that thread about integration on This American Life: the people who are close but at the top of the heap are in the most precarious position, because they worked hard for it but the know how easy it is to lose. So they're threatened by anyone with less trying to get what they have.

It's the only plausible explanation for this ongoing drama about what a handful of people are doing. A handful of people displacing zero children.
