I thought I was pretty laid back, but the pre-k drop off this morning (first day of school, charter), and the two Maryland tags double parked that rushed their kids by us because they were "late for work" really got under my skin. I thought the forum overstated the issue. Maybe not. It was pretty obvious.

So, its ok those with DC tags do it, just not MD. |
There are legit explanations, OP. Maybe try to find out more. |
which school? |
They may have moved recently and not gotten new tags yet. They might have hired a nanny from MD. Maybe Grandma lives in MD and is helping out. |
None of their business. Maybe it is a babysitter or relative. |
DC people just dont do that -- unless it's a Mercedes driver, I see that all time around town. |
As a taxpayer, it is my business. |
Honestly, how could someone get away this?? Would they never have anyone over to their house to play, lie to everyone's faces about where they live, rush in and out every day with MD plates? It's just hard to imagine doing this day in and out without anyone getting suspicious. |
I agree. |
Or they live in DC and are ducking DC taxes by keeping their cars registered in MD (where there is no inspection/personal property tax obligation). I have a coworker who lives in my neighborhood in the VA 'burbs and still has MD tags on her car (it's been more than a year since she moved to VA). |
Or military - active duty are not required to transfer tags. |
OP, MD residents who work in DC like to avail themselves of free preschool provided by DCPS. By K, many of those kids will be attending school in MD.
If it bothers you, report it. |
So, its it ok as a taxpayer that we a stranger does a full audit on your taxes and other personal finances to make sure you are not cheating? |
Or their car is in the shop, and they rented a car, borrowed one from a relative, etc . . . Or they are among the many many kinship care providers and foster parents of DC wards who live in MD. Or they're the parent with weekend custody (it is Monday after all), and the other parent lives in DC. |
