Even for Republican billionaire Ken Griffin, Florida’s expanded “Don’t Say Gay” law is a bridge too far.

In a statement to The Harvard University student newspaper The Crimson, a spokesperson for the GOP megadonor said he opposes the new regulations, which bar teachers in all grades from delving into topics related to gender and sexual identity. Previously, the law only applied to teachers in third grade or below; Griffin endorsed those measures.

“Like the vast majority of Americans, Ken believes that discussions on gender identity and sexual orientation should be led by parents with their children at home, rather than by teachers in elementary schools,” the spokesperson wrote. “However, as a steadfast supporter of open discourse, academic freedom, and free speech, Ken disagrees with Florida’s recent rule extending the prohibition of classroom instruction on these topics through 12th grade.”

I’m not sure this is making the point you think it is. While Griffin opposes the new bill which extends to grade 12, he supported the bill when it extended to grade 3, as did a surprising large majority of Floridians. DeSantis may be overreaching here currently but this does not equate to the R platform being wholly unpopular or out of touch. Honestly if Dems want to play that card, they should focus on abortion where the R position is much more unpopular.

We are! And yes, this is making exactly the point I think it is. Rs have the opportunity to make inroads with popular (if loathsome) policies - ones I despise but I can see that plenty of Americans like. But instead of doing that, they grab that bag and run on down the road into utter crazytown. See also: 6 week abortion bans. They could have gone to 15 weeks or even 12 weeks, and really activated Dem voters but probably not have alienated too many Republicans. But nope! Why do the hateful but acceptable, even popular, thing, when you can take it to 11.

Pro choice Republican here. He WOULD have alienated too many Republicans. I would love a pro choice candidate, but know it’s not realistic.

Plus a million. Literally the only two issues with which I even partially agree with Dems are abortion (within reason, no late term BS) and some gun control (also within reason, automatics be gone, mental health checks and wait periods must be required). Sadly, the rest of the Dem platform is beyond the pale and has verged into bizarro world. Criminals are the new victims, police are bad, success and hard work are now evil, men are the new women, mangling the English language over pronouns (“they” is plural FFS), the nuclear family is considered “privelege” Out of control immigration and crime ruining our cities, open borders leading to a fentenal crisis of epic proportion killing kids everywhere, use of the FBI, IRS, DOJ and the media to suppress investigations and free speech, riots destruction and theft are just fine, mentally ill homeless have the right to camp out on your doorstep to shoot up and ruin parks/public transit instead of forcing them into shelters and programs for help, veterans are being displaced out of homeless shelters in favor of illegal immigrants. And that’s just the beginning. In fact, the title of this entire thread is an epic example of has lighting. It makes me sad the author even believes his own BS. I want to vote Dem on those two issues but just can’t because they are dismantling the notion of a peaceful society. Depressing.

Democrats love to pretend there was "something" Republican politicians could do to make them vote for a Republican, but ultimately they vote Democrat no matter what the Republicans do. There's always some reason those gosh darn Republicans are too extreme this time.

Larry Hogan and Charlie Baker say hi. Arnold Schwarzenegger, too.

Because the thing is that Democrats will vote for Republicans sometimes, as you can see.

But I'm not even talking about whether Democrats will vote for these lunatics who are full time residents of crazytown. I'm talking more about Rs themselves and those sweet sweet independents whose vote everyone comes a-courting. Do you think it's because Pennsylvania is a bright blue state that that MAGA candidate lost the governor's race? Do you think that Hershel Walker was a great candidate who seemed really focused on the things that normal people are interested in?

Well, I'm from the south and everyone I know who died from Covid was a republican antivaxxer. There a lot more of them than you think, but I don't care if you believe me or not. Just wait til 2024. Republicans are going to have to cheat even more to try to win. Killing off your voters and grifting the GOP "base" isn't that smart in the long run.

Sorry babe, you lost the right to scream bodily autonomy when your party forced health children, young adults and any person wanting to keep their job to be forced to put something in their body that neither stopped transmission or contracting a virus that primarily in affect the elderly.

The above comment just shows how out of touch republicans are with reality.

Too bad the people I know who have died from Covid aren't elderly, but we're mostly middle aged unvaxxed republicans.

https://www.medicaleconomics.com/view/more-republicans-than-democrats-died-after-covid-19-vaccines-were-available

I don’t know anyone who died from Covid, so we canceled each other out. And funny how you didn’t address the forced vaccination of children and young adults.
But at the end of the day, I will fight for choice versus giving up bodily autonomy. And will not be a hypocrite while doing it.

And BS the junk article or “study” you pot explicitly states they did not have complete data or info on individual vaccination status which limited the ability to draw broad conclusions.
But did anyway.
Critical thinking is a virtue, try it sometime.

Way more than a million Americans died from Covid. I guess you are demonstrating how few people you know.

I and everyone else who went to public schools have been "forced" to get vaccines for decades in order to go to school. Also anyone in the military. You anti-vax people are nutsos. Go live in a walled-off commune amongst yourselves where you can enjoy your illnesses and plagues all by yourselves.

Put down the TV remote and step outside. Breathe deeply. Talk to a Democrat. Observe with your eyes. Do anything to purge your mind of this GQP conspiracy talking point nonsense. They’ve gotten you all spun up and you aren’t even making sense anymore.

So, you're willing to have women's blood on your hands in exchange for low taxes or whatever?

Sorry babe, you lost the right to scream bodily autonomy when your party forced health children, young adults and any person wanting to keep their job to be forced to put something in their body that neither stopped transmission or contracting a virus that primarily in affect the elderly.

The above comment just shows how out of touch republicans are with reality.

Too bad the people I know who have died from Covid aren't elderly, but we're mostly middle aged unvaxxed republicans.

I vote to turn Florida into the walled off right wing commune. They are already over half way there.

Depressing.

THIS is the comment I meant to quote. My moderate D and independent friends are all scratching their heads and wondering when the Democratic Party lost its way on so so many issues. At first they deflected and acted like it wasn’t really true. The biggest losers are the refusal to deal with crime and the trans issue. Most people view gay people and trans people as completely different things. And all of my friends support the equality for homosexuality that we now have in marriage and so many other aspects of life. But trans—- no. Not the same. Just isn’t.
