I mean these things never come out of nowhere. I agree with you if both guys had been close and stand up friends up until this point and one misinterpreted another's comment and went entirely nuclear than the second guy is in the wrong. But it just doesn't really feel like that is what happened here.

No. Your husband should have taken the high road. If someone stabs you you don't get to stab them back "for free" because it's fair game. You both go to jail.
