I was there. Reid spoke for about 30 minutes and then the school board member, Stella last-name-I-can't-spell, took questions for a little while.

Reid was there to tell us she decided Coch can't come back. Rumor is he was told he was coming back up until yesterday. They met in April and he was told he could return then. Then she changed her mind based on his probation time frame. The principal job will be posted and then the new principal will help choose the new AP.

I don't think Reid won any supporters. No matter what you think of Coch, the communication has been non-existent and her attitude was "this is what I've decided and I don't need to hear what you think before making a decision." As one of the parents said, it could have been an email. It actually made me more irritated than I had been and now I don't like her. Parents felt like they had been patient and there was no recognition of that. Or almost that they had been taken advantage of because they weren't the crazy demanding parents demanding answers.

Not everyone was in support of Coch coming back, but the majority were. There are real issues with staff retention now, according to the teachers who spoke up.

Stella said, after Reid left, that the school board was told there was regular communication with the school community about the status. Obviously that wasn't true.

I’m confused. Did Dr Reid actually say this or are you just spreading gossip?

Geez. It sounds like Reid could not have handled it more poorly. Why would she tell someone they can have their job back if she was clearly having reservations about it? If you’re a leader charged with making such decisions you better be damn sure before you communicate with that person. To tell someone that and then change her mind makes her look she is on over her head a a leader. And then to share that with the community? So stupid! It completely undermines her credibility. I am not pro Coch — we are new to the school — but the lack of communication and now uncertainty about leadership at the school is absolutely going to cause teachers to leave. And I’m sure Reid doesn’t even care because in her mind Navy is an affluent school that will be “fine” either way, as that has been the prevailing attitude of people in charge at FCPS… only worry about the low SES schools and who cares about the others. I was willing to give her a chance but she is not up for this job.

Reid made it very clear that Coch is not coming back. However, a lot of people (not all) made it very clear they want him back and are not going down without a fight. My worry is this: I believe Reid. She isn’t going to budge. It’s too much of a liability for her and I predict she would be crucified by other groups who vehemently oppose his return. Because of this, I worry that prospective principals- the good ones at least- are going to watch the ensuing drama unfold and not want anything to do with Navy. I think we need to accept the outcome of tonight’s meeting and start looking forward and focus our efforts on how to attract the best talent possible to permanently fill the position. What message do we want to send to them? That if they come, the teachers are going to leave? Who is going to want to step into that mess?
We need to put pressure on Tyson (who btw hightailed it tf out of there as fast as he could) to get this process rolling. It’s June. The good principals are going to get scooped up by other schools if they don’t move quickly on this.

I have this same question. Did Reid say she had told him he could come back and then changed her mind because his probation would run longer?

Reid initially said he could come back because she thought his probation was over in September, 12 months from date of incident. It's actually over 12 months from date of conviction in December. She claimed confusion about the probation term and said she would not have a principal who is on active probation. I don't necessarily disagree with that, but it's abundantly obvious what the timelines are. The orders are written so your average Joe understands them. I don't know how she was confused. Bottom line was they didn't list the position because she thought he was coming back.

Hmm, I’m one of the parents who liked Coch but didn’t think it was appropriate for him to come back. But that’s pretty messed up to not have your facts straight and tell him one thing then take it back.

That said, I wholeheartedly agree with the poster who said regardless of what any of us think, what’s done is done and the best thing for the Navy staff and students is to accept it and move on and welcome whoever comes next.

Agree that we need to move on. Trying to protest or fight it will just lead to division in the community and make it harder for the new principal. But this whole thing sure doesn’t make Reid look good. How does she not make sure she is completely clear on the outcome of his case first? She better hope there are still good candidates out there who would be interested in the job. Delaying the search for months due to “confusion” is just plain incompetence.

I don’t think this is true. I think they couldn’t list the position until his contract officially ran out, which was in early June. He couldn’t be let out of his contract earlier because he didn’t get a felony. If he had gotten a felony he could have been fired and the search started earlier.

Seems fishy to me. She could have easily posed the question of when his probation ends. There are two possible dates. No brainer.

Of course most people in the room were pro Coch - there is a certain group of women who adore him and put all their friends up to going to the meeting. You know, I know it, Michelle Reid knew it.

This is very similar to what happened at Haycock. Nobody wanted to be the principal there because they KNEW the parent population was out of control and pushy and just awful to work with.

I would not believe everything you read on this message board, folks. That's not how the meeting went down.
