No, we are here. Just watching you all get spun up and excited. Also, great to see all of you speak up at the meeting with Reid…. oh wait, most of you didn’t. Easier to be a coward posting anonymously on DCUM. Nice!

I heard that some of the people who spoke up at the meeting were over the top. It's pretty cringe to publicly go that hard for someone who drove into a house. Even if you really like the guy and consider him a friend. Just saying.

Speaking of cringe, how about the parent who asked everyone to write letters on Coch’s behalf to get his sentence reduced?

I heard she got like 50+ letters. We are neutral on the matter and did not participate.

My kids had activities so we had to miss the meeting. Really wished I could have made it to see some of this commentary. Would have brought some popcorn.

Well I was at the meeting and I would have loved to share that popcorn with you. There were definitely some Oscar worthy performances. Actually, the meeting kind of went like this:

(Reid enters stage left)
Reid- You want answers?
Teachers- We want the truth!
Reid- YOU CANT HANDLE THE TRUTH!!!
Me- Fasten your seatbelts, it’s going to be a bumpy ride.
Everyone- What we’ve got here is a failure to communicate.
Tyson- ::clicks heels:: There’s no place like home.
Everyone- We’re mad as hell and we’re not going to take it anymore!
Reid- Frankly, my dear, I don’t give a damn.
::Several people start to cry::
Me- Surely, you can’t be serious.
People- I am. And don’t call me Shirley.
(Yadda yadda yadda. Yelling ensues. Crying continues).
Reid- I’ll be back.

And that was pretty much it.

I actually wrote a letter against a reduced sentence. Just because he’s popular doesn’t mean he’s above the law.

We didn’t need to speak up because we knew Dr. Reid wasn’t going to base her decision or change her mind based on what parents want. The Coch supporters never even thought it possible he wasn’t wanted back by others. They bulldozed everyone at the school from the start. They overpowered the meeting of course. They also tried to spearhead a letter writing campaign for Coch earlier in the school year. Complete waste of time. Anyone with an ounce of sense knew Dr. Reid wasn’t bringing back a principal who had a mugshot and a DUI.

That was great! You should be in AAP. Or better yet, you should have a chance to do a PBL. Yeah, that's it!

I think we all can agree (I would hope) that he should not have drank and driven his car. He had options. He chose to do that and put himself and other people at risk. He has to live with the consequences of his actions.

I ask you this.. had he not been "popular" would people have rallied around him to try to bring him back ?

Of course not. There's a weird dynamic at Navy among certain parents of kids in the upper grades and some of the staff. Some moms get very buddy buddy with the teachers and the administrators. They then seem to think that their opinions matter more because they've "taken the time to be so involved". I wish they would accept that their kids will be moving on soon and that parents of kids in the younger grades may not agree with them on things. If my kid was in 5th/6th grade I would be turning my attention toward what's going on at their future middle school, not trying to continue exerting influence at their elementary school.

By all means, feel free to get involved and help out at ALL those activities your students get to enjoy with the same set of parents volunteering over and over again. I particularly enjoyed volunteering at a large event at the school and having non- volunteers come up to complain about something at the event they didn't think we did correctly. Every parent should be involved somewhat at their child's school - it helps to develop a bigger sense of community, and it sure would be nice to have other parents help out...
