I ask you this.. had he not been "popular" would people have rallied around him to try to bring him back ?

Of course not. There's a weird dynamic at Navy among certain parents of kids in the upper grades and some of the staff. Some moms get very buddy buddy with the teachers and the administrators. They then seem to think that their opinions matter more because they've "taken the time to be so involved". I wish they would accept that their kids will be moving on soon and that parents of kids in the younger grades may not agree with them on things. If my kid was in 5th/6th grade I would be turning my attention toward what's going on at their future middle school, not trying to continue exerting influence at their elementary school.

By all means, feel free to get involved and help out at ALL those activities your students get to enjoy with the same set of parents volunteering over and over again. I particularly enjoyed volunteering at a large event at the school and having non- volunteers come up to complain about something at the event they didn't think we did correctly. Every parent should be involved somewhat at their child's school - it helps to develop a bigger sense of community, and it sure would be nice to have other parents help out...

Oh look we found the MOM that MOM-you get a sticker for being most involved

Please do get over yourself. I volunteer as much as my full time, 2-3 days/week in person job allows. I don't complain. But I definitely don't think I am superior to people who never volunteer, nor do I think my opinion matters more. There are many legitimate reasons why people can't volunteer. In my experience people who volunteer super frequently at school and kid activities aren't usually doing it out of altruism or a desire to build community. They do it because of their need to control things.

+1 they also want to try to spy on their kid and the class as a whole. They want to to try to suck up to the teacher.

In reality it's probably like a dozen navy parents on here and the rest are probably trolls. It's a cush job for sure. Well... except for when you have to deal with the AAP parents.

Is anyone planning to write in to say what qualities we need in a leader? We need someone who can bridge the divide between AAP and PBL and who will have grade level teams coordinate more.

Yes. That is exactly what I am planning to write.

Also we need to have reading/writing standards for each grade level. So in third grade, all students should be working on writing good solid paragraphs. Then in 4th grade, they can build on that by moving to 3 and 5 paragraph essays. 5th should build on 4th and etc.

Why isnt each grade's advanced math teacher coordinating with the AAP math?

Excellent question. They should be but they aren’t. Hopefully the new principal will address this.

Is that not already outlined in the Virginia DOE standards of learning curriculum framework? Along with guidance for cursive writing? (3.7 The student will write legibly in cursive). So my question is: why are those standards not being followed for writing? Because I really don’t want to have to keep spending my summers having to teach my kids how to write properly.

Would also love to see a plan that depends less on computer for everything and as previous posters had mentioned, focuses on the essential basics- for writing- paragraph construction, how to map out an outline, cursive handwriting etc. so many times I ask both kids what they did at school and all I hear is oh we got to play xx game on the computer or oh I was done with my work so the teachers let us watch you tube… we don’t even allow YouTube in our home as we have had some behavior issues stemming from it yet it’s always something our kids are given access to in school - to just count down the clock until dismissal instead of being actively engaged.

Abcya is the biggest waste of time. And YouTube! One time the teacher left a YouTube video on and left the room for a quick few seconds and an inappropriate ad (I think it was an ad for a horror movie) came on and scared the class. This was in 2nd grade.

Yes! We have noticed most upper grade Navy teachers do not effectively teach how to make a plan for writing, whether it’s jotting down ideas or making an outline or using a graphic organizer.

Our 4th grade language arts teacher actually did this this year. Wonderful teacher. If she is reading this she knows who she is.
