Rookie Democratic Rep. Ilhan Omar, fresh off igniting an intra-party uproar with comments widely viewed as anti-Semitic, took a swipe at former President Barack Obama, saying in an explosive interview the 44th president's message of "hope and change" was a "mirage" and blasting his administration's drone and border detention policies.

Omar, D-Minn., took aim at the president's famed slogan, while further criticizing the Democratic Party for “perpetuating the status quo,” in the interview with Politico.

“Recalling the ‘caging of kids’ at the U.S.-Mexico border and the ‘droning of countries around the world’ on Obama’s watch," Omar charged that Obama "operated within the same fundamentally broken framework as his Republican successor,” the piece reads.

Omar is then quoted as saying: “We can’t be only upset with Trump… His policies are bad, but many of the people who came before him also had really bad policies. They just were more polished than he was.

“And that’s not what we should be looking for anymore. We don’t want anybody to get away with murder because they are polished. We want to recognize the actual policies that are behind the pretty face and the smile.”

The vast majority of Americans do not care about Israel and can not find it on a map. There is lobbying and money but not many people who base their vote on Israel. Remember when Bibi was campaigning against Obama? Bibi did everything he could and it had little to no impact on the election. Israel gets a few people really excite and the rest do not care. This is why it is a prefect issue to grind on.

Did you even read Omar's comments about Obama? It had nothing to do with Israel.

Is someone going to start a new thread on the Obama comments?

Of course, accusing Jews of having dual loyalty is anti-Semitic and Omar didn't do that.

Its not clear who she was accusing of "dual allegiance" since she did not use either the words Jew, evangelical, or member of congress. Not clear if its her poor English (something few seem willing to mention - granted POTUS has gotten people used to poor English and resulting ambiguity) or it was deliberate. Given that Jews are a big piece of the support for Israel, and that Jews (rather more than evangelicals and congress members) who have historically been accused of dual loyalty, one might have expected her to be sensitive to that.

Perhaps it just inexperience. Now that this resolution has been passed, perhaps she will conduct herself like a worthy member of congress, not like a college sophomore, or like a Tea Party congressman. We shall see.

Why?

Opportunistic thread #2 - anti-Democrats?

Many of the Rs and moderates have said the same thing about Obama - and CLINTON, for that matter. Right now, with this little sideshow, she's endeared herself a tad bit more to the Republicans.

lol

Who gives a sh*t at this point.

Nerds get caught up in minutiae, because there is a tremendous and fulfilling sense of control in understanding every single detail of a thing more than any other living creature.
-Chris Hardwick

I'm not calling you a nerd; I'm only proving a point about minutiae.

Omar isn't entirely wrong in her thinking. However, she needs to pull back and calm the f*ck down before making any other statements. She is angry and resentful - and her statements are only growing the gap between the liberals and conservatives in this country.

Regarding "dual allegiance," if all American Jews completed a likert scale on allegiance to Israel, you'd see the full gamut. I have Conservative pals who can't stand Israel - yet have sent their kids to Israel on a school trip. I have more liberal pals who have no opinion on Israel. And my son's preschool director (Yes, we sent our son to a Jewish preschool - and we're not religious.) would express frustration about the contentious relationship between Israelis and Muslims b/c there are MORE similarities than differences!

It's all gray, and the focus on minutiae gets us nowhere.

Maybe we should stop attacking each other and figure out ways to better humanity.

cuz guess what? I pee just as you do; I simply have a different "vehicle" for doing so.

Obama is a polished murderer. She better be careful. She will lose support quickly of the powerful people in the Dem party and be on her own defending herself.

I’m a Muslim and she is embarrassing. Just focus on representing your district and enough with the drama.

Here is the interview Omar did with Politico. I am not sure why posters are linking to articles reporting about the interview rather than the interview itself:

https://www.politico.com/magazine/story/2019/03/08/ilhan-omar-dean-phillips-minnesota-democratic-party-225696

She didn't call Obama a murderer. Once again, folks have a need to "interpret" her words rather than just address what she actually said. Here is the part of the interview in question:

We can’t be only upset with Trump. … His policies are bad, but many of the people who came before him also had really bad policies. They just were more polished than he was,” Omar says. “And that’s not what we should be looking for anymore. We don’t want anybody to get away with murder because they are polished. We want to recognize the actual policies that are behind the pretty face and the smile.

Please note that there were many presidents prior to Trump who were polished and had nice smiles and she clearly says that she is talking about "many of the people who came before" Trump.

I'm sure that I can mischaracterize your words and make you appear embarrassing as well.

And, this..........

Omar says the “hope and change” offered by Barack Obama was a mirage. Recalling the “caging of kids” at the U.S.-Mexico border and the “droning of countries around the world” on Obama’s watch, she argues that the Democratic president operated within the same fundamentally broken framework as his Republican successor.

And, these quotes were exactly what were highlighted in the Fox article linked.

So will she clarify that that is about Dubya, and not Obama? Was Dubya in fact polished?

BTW, about Adelson

https://www.timesofisrael.com/alexandria-ocasio-cortez-says-aipac-is-coming-after-her-its-not/

In 2007, Sheldon Adelson, the casino magnate who was a major AIPAC funder, broke with the lobby over its tacit backing for an increase of funding to the Palestinian Authority. Adelson’s split, which The Times notes, created the space for right-wingers to go after lawmakers that AIPAC would have discouraged targeting.

AIPAC is not what a lot of people think it is.

The Politico piece suggests many Somali Americans in her district were taken aback and are uncomfortable with her remarks.

Please know, I am a Jew, and I do NOT blame all American Muslims, or all Somali Americans, for what Rep Omar has expressed. (and I hope I have the courage to take on anyone in my community who does so generalize)

Shalom/salaam.

She won't be asked to clarify anything. Or, if she is, she will ignore the media, put a phone to her ear and pretend to be distracted.
She seems to intentionally say provocative statements then just smile and walk by the reporters when pressed for clarification.
