The back story is that the Obamas' first choice for school in DC was GDS, which reminded them of Lab. But then security/logistics issues with the GDS Palisades campus caused them to settle on Sidwell.

I have heard this and it is very plausible because FLOTUS toured GDS before they moved to the White House.

They also toured Maret so you could say it was plausible that Maret was a backup.

I thought Chicago Latin was the better school.

Lab and Latin are essentially equivalently elite private schools. Lab has a large number of U of C faculty kids, so some people think it gives it a more intellectual vibe. It's kind of splitting hairs to say one is better than the other.

Sidwell had to significantly upgrade its security and move away from its open campus once the Obamas showed up. It is quite safe now, but it was no safer than Maret or GDS before that. I'm also sure Sidwell is not the perfect fit for either girl, but it's hard to say what they might have been had their dad not been elected. It changed everything for them. It's hard to be a White House kid these days.

And just how would YOU know that Sidwell isn't the perfect fit for the girls? Do you sit down to dinner with the family to discuss it?
