The Canadian case was just confirmed.

And the anxiety is growing — someone taken off a Vegas to BWI flight (after it had flown cross country) bc of symptoms + person had been in Beijing a few days prior. Fortunately did not have coronavirus — more likely a cold or flu.

Laurie Garrett has a good list of tips of how to protect yourself from catching this, or any virus.

Weird article, but some points make some sense, I suppose.

She had great suggestions.

So how is canceling/delaying unnecessary domestic travel? Was planning to go to LA in late Feb and now IDK -- it's a long flight and do I really want to wonder every time someone coughs? Plus

Put on a surgical mask and go to bed on the flight. Ask to move if someone is coughing a lot. I’ve asked to be moved before and was accommodated - just don’t make a scene.

As Asian country canceling school for 2 weeks — this is serious.

I am a germophbe. I follow these precautions every day and I still get sick.

I was my hands furiously when I get home each day before touching anything
I Clorox wipe my phone multiple times a day, as well as my work keyboard and phone
I clean surfaces, knobs, switches, and bathrooms, daily
I wear long sleeves and use my sleeves to touch door knobs, handles, etc
I don’t eat with my hands outside of my house
I avoid people who seem sick, and try not to go busy places like the mall or concerts during flu season
I literally walked 8 miles last Saturday to avoid crowded subway trains and the germs involved

And I still have a horrible cold right now.

Did you know that studies show that you can catch the flu by just being in the same room as someone with it. They don’t even have to cough or talk. Breathing is enough. So while I’m glad this lady was lucky and didn’t get sick, her luck isn’t science.

Have you seen an immunologist? I used to get sick all the time, saw one, he recommended the Pneumonia vaccine. I rarely get sick now. It was life changing.

Her advice:
If someone is coughing or sneezing, I ask them to put on a mask
protect me from their potentially contaminated fluids. If they decline,
I step a meter (about 3 feet) away from them, or I leave.

Science:
A recent study from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology noted that germs from one sneeze could travel from 19 to 26 feet. What's also unfortunate is how fast these germs travel: A sneeze can move 100 miles per hour, which makes getting away from someone when they sneeze just about impossible.
