Do you mean in the DMV? You realize most people celebrating here, live here and have never step foot in China even if they are Chinese American?? Is your concern that you’ll attend and out of the 1000 people in attendance it’ll turn out that one family brings along their cousin visiting from China or even 5 or 10 families? Bc how can you know who has what/what flight they were on yesterday?

The kids who are here for the Longfellow program - 20 kids and 5 adults

Arent there multiple celebrations even in this region? How do you know which one they’d go to? Though I suppose if it concerns you, avoid all of them or go to one that’s 1-2 hrs away — you know they’d take the kids to one close by just for ease of transportation.

It’s not a great situation for all. Can‘T imagine what ppl maybe saying to them.

I teach many Chinese heritage students and first gen immigrants. There’s starting to be some nervousness about being targeted by ignorant people. Not an unreasonable fear given how Haitians and DRC Congolese have been treated in the past. Or even claims that Central American migrants were bringing measles.

Yup, and how mainland Chinese invariably think westerners all have AIDS and black people are all drug addicts.

Have you seen the emerging videos from their hospitals? It is a nightmare. Anyone who is advocating for a free medicare for all should watch it.

China doesn’t have free medical care for all, you idiot. And a national healthcare system would be much better equipped to coordinate a response than a partial, private system like the US. Hence your life expectancy is so much lower than in civilized countries.

Given that upthread someone was talking about how they would avoid a lunar new year event, I think the fear is definitely legitimate.

A Chinese doctor that was treating these coronavirus patients in Wuhan has does today.

This virus is swift and deadly. Where the hell did it come from?

Is this now considered a pandemic?

No, pandemics are much larger and more widespread.

Fear of what? That not as many people show up at the celebration as they expected?

This won’t have the same devastation in the US as it will in China. Many Chinese eat horrible things, like dogs, strange wild creatures, rhinoceros horn. You can’t do that stuff for years and years and not have it catch up with you.

Looks like there’s a case in Canada now — unclear if they’ve confirmed it but they’re treating it/holding a press conference as if they have. Someone who returned from Wuhan to Toronto.

Canada now? Ugh. I will say that I appreciate the power and speed of technology and the internet nowadays. Imagine if this were the 1980s, we wouldn’t have heard about any of this until it was too late.

I’m glad that for once all the countries in the entire world are working together to identify where this disease has spread, flight routes, airports, etc, and tracking the patients everywhere that have confirmed cases. That makes me feel at least a little better that it will be contained sooner rather than later. I also heard that doctors are already collaborating to try and develop a vaccine for this virus.

See what can happen when we work together? I hope Trump takes note and realizes he needs to stop trying to isolate Americans from the rest of the world. He should be working with the other countries in the world, not against. And situations like this is exactly why.

Conversely, this wouldn’t have spread so fast in the 1980s with fewer people and definitely fewer people zipping around the globe in airplanes.

We always knew air travel would accelerate something really bad spreading world wide. It remains to be seen if this will be something really bad.

State of emergency in Hong Kong with schools closed until Feb 17 - so 2 extra weeks off after the Chinese New Year break - a and they’re saying kids should stay home, not go out and play - presumably to limit contact with people. As Asian country canceling school for 2 weeks — this is serious.

”Unless your line of work involves studying bats or snakes with colds and flus, why would you have heard of an animal having this?”

I’m certain that all the numerous news outlets and associated press would have mentioned if this particular coronavirus had been a particular problem in the animal world recently.
