Trump sides with Russia, attacks America

Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov, a master of diplomatic verbosity and sardonic barbs, summed up the results of the Helsinki summit in just three exuberant words: "better than super."

After four years of getting short shrift by his American counterparts, Russian President Vladimir Putin was standing side by side with President Trump, who lavished him with the words of praise, respect and awe normally only heard on Russian state television.
When Putin militarily intervened in Ukraine in 2014, President Barack Obama called Russia a "regional power" that threatened its neighbors out of weakness, not strength. Russia's annexation of Crimea set off a precipitous decline in relations with the United States. When he took office, Trump could not reverse the trend because of accusations that Moscow interfered in the 2016 election.

And then, without any change in Kremlin policy, Trump agreed to sit down one-on-one with Putin.

"The summit was yet another small miracle created by Trump," columnist Edward Lozansky wrote in the newspaper Izvestia. "As much as they tried to humiliate Trump or give him unsolicited advice, the American president disdainfully brushed aside his enemies and confidently strode to his goal."

The GDP of Russia is 62nd in the world. It’s crippled economically. It barely has a single aircraft carrier.

Wow. The GOP are so much more pathetic than I thought.

Legislators in a co-equal branch of government need permission/go-ahead now to speak out against the president? What does this sound like?

Trump is crippled economically. He uses Russia as his credit line. This is what happens when the GOP ignores norms around releasing tax returns and financial disclosures and emoluments. This is what you get.

That is the only explanation for POTUS’ acting in the best interest of a murderer and dictator, head of a country that continues to intervene in our elections. Putin helped put POTUS in office — why on earth would he oppose PUTIN?

Yes, it’s horrifying what our democratic electoral process has born, yet the founding guys could not have anticipated the internet or its reach and influence. [i][u]

We need new laws. The technological revolution has changed the game entirely, and the US institutions have not caught up. Our Democracy will fail if we don’t act now. And that means removing Republicans from power, no matter what your party affiliation. If you care about preserving democracy, vote for Democrats. They are the only politicians who will preserve our nation. Patriots unite behind them!!

The founding guys absolutely envisioned a crazy tyrannical guy leading the country - they were very familiar with that type. Maybe they couldn't envision the internet as the way he got to power, but they did write in protections for exactly this situation. What they *absolutely* didn't envision was one of the three branches of government completely abdicating their responsibility to stand as a check and balance.

So then why exactly do we need a huge alliance to defend ourselves from them?

FYI, NATO's article 5 for mutual defence has been invoked once, after 9/11. Al Qaeeda also did not have a large GDP, but NATO came to our assistance. NATO protects against the disruptions Russia can do in Europe, as well as enable coordination against other threats. Its part of the security architecture that has protected democracy in the post war world. It may well need to evolve to deal with threats like cyber war, but it is not obsolete, and the current admin in its official positions does not say that it is.

+1 million . The purpose of NATO is not to defend countries from Russia.

Trump has now walked back his walk back.

Just asked @realDonaldTrump if he believes Russia is still targeting the US.
His answer: "Thank you very much. No"

This after his own Director of National Intelligence said the threat is still ongoing.

Putin must have texted him after Grammargate yesterday. What is the emoji for “Nice try, now get down on your knees, b*t h”?

Video of Trump saying "No" when asked if Russia is still targeting the U.S. (DNI Coats just said a few days ago that the lights are "blinking red.")

He's a shameful excuse for a President.

https://www.nytimes.com/2018/07/18/us/politics/trump-putin-higher-intelligence.html?hp&action=click&pgtype=Homepage&clickSource=story-heading&module=a-lede-package-region®ion=top-news&WT.nav=top-news

President Trump said on Wednesday that Russia was no longer targeting the United States, contradicting his own intelligence chief and just a day after promising that his administration was working to prevent Kremlin interference in the upcoming midterm elections.

Mr. Trump’s comments were the latest in a dizzying collection of conflicting statements from Mr. Trump since he emerged from a private meeting with President Vladimir V. Putin of Russia on Monday in Helsinki, Finland. And they directly contradict assertions from Dan Coats, the director of national intelligence, who has repeatedly said that Russia continues to try to interfere with American democracy.

The president’s changing statements on his perception of Russia’s intentions toward the United States underscore concerns that Mr. Trump does not believe American intelligence officials.

In brief remarks ahead of a cabinet meeting on Wednesday, Mr. Trump said Mr. Putin was not happy because “there’s never been a president as tough on Russia as I have been.”
