Well at least the Russians are thrilled. They’ve gone from being international pariahs to having the American leader groveling before them.

Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov, a master of diplomatic verbosity and sardonic barbs, summed up the results of the Helsinki summit in just three exuberant words: "better than super."

After four years of getting short shrift by his American counterparts, Russian President Vladimir Putin was standing side by side with President Trump, who lavished him with the words of praise, respect and awe normally only heard on Russian state television.
When Putin militarily intervened in Ukraine in 2014, President Barack Obama called Russia a "regional power" that threatened its neighbors out of weakness, not strength. Russia's annexation of Crimea set off a precipitous decline in relations with the United States. When he took office, Trump could not reverse the trend because of accusations that Moscow interfered in the 2016 election.

And then, without any change in Kremlin policy, Trump agreed to sit down one-on-one with Putin.

"The summit was yet another small miracle created by Trump," columnist Edward Lozansky wrote in the newspaper Izvestia. "As much as they tried to humiliate Trump or give him unsolicited advice, the American president disdainfully brushed aside his enemies and confidently strode to his goal."

“But Chief of Staff John Kelly was irate. According to a source, he told Trump it would make things worse for him with Robert Mueller. He also exerted pressure to try to get the president to walk back his remarks. According to three sources familiar with the situation, Kelly called around to Republicans on Capitol Hill and gave them the go-ahead to speak out against Trump. (The White House did not respond to a request for comment.) Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell and House Speaker Paul Ryan held televised press conferences to assert that Russia did meddle in the election.”

More than half of Americans disapprove of the way U.S. President Donald Trump is handling relations with Russia, according to a Reuters/Ipsos poll conducted after his controversial summit and joint news conference with Russian President Vladimir Putin.

However, Trump’s performance at the Helsinki summit, where Trump refused to blame the Russian leader for meddling in the 2016 U.S. election and cast doubt on the findings of U.S. intelligence agencies, did not seem to have an impact on his overall approval rating.

Forty-two percent of registered voters said they approved of Trump’s performance in office in the latest opinion poll, compared with a daily average of between 40 and 44 percent so far in July.

The poll found that 55 percent of registered voters disapproved while 37 percent approved of his handling of relations with Russia.

Among Republicans, 71 percent approved of his handling of Russia compared to 14 percent of Democrats.

Congress can hold hearings and have her testify in open or closed session. It’s about to hit the fan because Russia is issuing announcements about implementing new agreements on START and Syria that no one hear has any idea about.

So many people at the higher ends of intelligence loved my press conference performance in Helsinki. Putin and I discussed many important subjects at our earlier meeting. We got along well which truly bothered many haters who wanted to see a boxing match. Big results will come!


Anyone else nervous about the big results? I think he is going to forgive sanctions.

Why does POTUS behavior surprise anyone? Even after his private meeting with Putin, you remain shocked that he’d behave exactly as Putin instructed? Putin controls POTUS’ money. That is the only explanation for POTUS’ acting in the best interest of a murderer and dictator, head of a country that continues to intervene in our elections. Putin helped put POTUS in office — why on earth would he oppose PUTIN?

Yes, it’s horrifying what our democratic electoral process has born, yet the founding guys could not have anticipated the internet or its reach and influence.

We need new laws. The technological revolution has changed the game entirely, and the US institutions have not caught up. Our Democracy will fail if we don’t act now. And that means removing Republicans from power, no matter what your party affiliation. If you care about preserving democracy, vote for Democrats. They are the only politicians who will preserve our nation. Patriots unite behind them!!

This rings a bit hollow given

1) he’s a lawmaker and instead of writing an op ed could have put forth legislation. Did he?

2) Obama increased sanctions in 2014 for Russia’s actions in Crimea

3) Nunes later became swept up in intelligence reports for conversing with someone under surveillance r/t Russia, falsely blamed Rice for politicizing the intel and unmasking, and other unwise and obstructive behaviors during the House intel investigation.
