That’s certainly a factor for many of the 300,000 teachers who have left in the last couple of years, don’t you think? I know it is at my school. |
Without safety, there can be no learning. |
100% no. In fact, I don’t think there will be any charge against the boy at all, because the minimum age is 7 by law. |
Parents need to be charged |
I teach kindergarten and I have to say it never occurred to me that I wouldn’t be allowed to search a student’s backpack or pockets. I go in their backpacks all the time to locate forms, put papers in etc. for older kids I wouldn’t but most 6 year olds still need assistance. |
+1 same for any student in elemtary school where I've worked. I'll add that I've never had an admin who would not support teacher concerns if any kind of weapon were suspected. I honestly can't imagine what the members of this school's admin team (or at Ethan Crumblry"s school) were thinking! |
+1 and the school's adminisyrative team (the ones who knew and dismissed teacher concerns) |
This is actual fact, people. Kids are TOTALLY getting wasted in unsafe schools. But keep ignoring this as long as there’s free babysitting. |
In that situation I’d check the backpack before even notifying admin. If I’m really worried about a kid I probably wouldn’t call in more adults to escalate and set them on edge |
*to clarify I know a lot of kids get agitated when they are “outnumbered” if I saw something concerning I’d call for backup |
What exactly would you do if you knew kid had a gun? Crickets, huh? |
He’s not going to be prosecuted at all. Unless he’s mature enough to form criminal intent, you can’t prosecute and it is typically presumed that the age at which that becomes possible is seven. People can sue the parents but it’s Richmond and you might not see gun outrage. Plus what lawyer wants to sue the parents when they won’t recover anything? |
I wasn’t blaming the teacher, and am sorry if it came across that way. I’m just saying that it wouldn’t occur to me not to look immediately. Calling extra people in tends to escalate things in my experience, activates fight or flight. |
Depending on school, calmly get other kids to walk to next classroom and buzz office for help. Our schools have a direct line/code for emergencies. Same for medical emergency like a seizure. |
