Western High School Boundary Map options (A/B/C/D)

They should have opened it like a traditional HS with boundaries and activities. My kid would have gone if they would have had sports.

Meren won’t be at the meeting tonight.

Hello community members,
As I hope you know, the first meeting is tonight, March 25, from 6:00-7:30pm, at Westfield HS, for the focused process to establish student attendance boundaries for the new Skyview High School. These boundaries would be required for the 2028-29 school year - not required this coming school year in September 2026, and would be opt-in for SY 2027-28.
Unfortunately, neither I nor my staff are able to attend this meeting. This meeting was only announced to the public and Board just one week ago. As important as this boundary work is, I had previous commitments elsewhere in the community - at the other end of the Hunter Mill district - that I am choosing to keep.
I have reviewed the slides that will be presented this evening, and I see that the bulk of the content is about the boundary process, which I am very familiar with, given the last 18 months of work on the comprehensive process.
However, I want to share this summary of three expected Board actions regarding Skyview that are to occur by/in June 2026, to establish:
Attendance boundary
Phasing of students- that is, which grades will be added to this new school in the coming years and who will eventually be required to attend per the boundary set; currently only 9th and 10th grade years are confirmed to begin in SY 26-27 with opt-in placement. The Superintendent had proposed phase in plans for the 27-28 and 28-29 school years, but those have not yet been confirmed by the Board.
Transportation provided to students regarding the phasing. I am particularly concerned about this, because the majority of the Board did not honor phasing allowed per our boundary policy nor bus service per our transportation policy for the comprehensive boundary change voted on in January 2026 - in essence, not fulfilling the promise of phasing. I am keeping a very close eye on this, and I encourage you to seek clarity from the Superintendent at every opportunity.
While the Board in recent months has considered phasing and transportation for Skyview, a new and distinct decision is needed for the above for Skyview.
There will be more community meetings in April and May, and I am eager to attend those to hear what you’re hearing and engage. In the meantime, please contact me if I can be helpful or if you’d like to share updates.
I hope you have an enjoyable spring break.

Sincerely,
Melanie

Reid: Focus on Westfield, Chantilly and Centreville HS. South Lakes and Oakton may or may not be impacted.

More clear as mud nonsense.

I got kicked out of the Zoom due to poor connection where I was. Did they ever share data on who opted in, in terms of what elementary schools they came from? Or how many total students have opted in?

It is hard to do sports the first year of a school opening. Maybe JV teams could be done.

DP. Water under the bridge but they could have offered varsity sports if they had waited until they had fixed boundaries to open, with freshmen and sophomore assigned to the school (no opt-out) and juniors given the ability to opt in.

That would have meant waiting another year to open Skyview and Reid wanted to open it this fall so she has a feather in her cap sooner rather than later. She’s been a disaster and it wouldn’t surprise people if she opens Skyview this fall and then starts looking for an exit strategy.

I thought the plan was for boundaries to be set for 2027-2028. Has this been pushed back another year?

Boundary Explorer Tool

Once draft boundary maps are developed, the community will be able to view them on our Boundary Explorer Tool, similar to what was used during the comprehensive boundary review. Families in the five western pyramids (Centreville, Chantilly, Oakton, South Lakes, and Westfield) will be able to search for their address and see whether they would potentially be impacted by proposed changes. There will also be an opportunity to leave comments in the Boundary Explorer Tool and/or respond to a brief survey.

Doesn’t this Boundary Explorer tool sound eerily similar to the Option E boundary tool?

I remember that website also had a button to leave feedback because I left a negative comment about Option E.

I suspect Option E would be one of the three scenarios. Hope I’m wrong.

Wednesday's meeting indicated that Options A, B, C and D were only random and the real boundary for Skyview will be none of those. They also said Chantilly and Westfield boundaries will be redone but not South Lakes. I wonder why they even came up with A-D options then? Why mislead people who are house hunting?

Does that mean SL will not be "in boundary"? I know kids from Fox Mill who are in my MS with my son and they all plan to go to Skyview. My kid is from Oak Hill/Chantilly pyramid so worst case, he is biking, but I would feel bad if the kids from Fox Mill who are at RCMS didn't get transportation to Skyview after opting in. This whole thing has been like a Knives Out Netfllix series but since we are walking distance I've been a lot more willing to roll the dice. But I do hope our kids friends who opted in get transport for at least the four years they committed to.

I have not understood the "opt in" option. If Skyview offers AP and South Lakes doesn't, wouldn't a majority of students from South Lakes opt-in for Skyview? How will Skyview accommodate all the opt-ins?

Reid said boundary would mainly focus on Westfield, Chantilly, Centreville with minimal impact to South Lakes and Oakton. Minimal isn’t no impact but no one knows what any of it actually will mean to boundaries and transportation other that the promised a minimum of hub-style transport to all enrolled from the 5 pyramids.

If I had to guess, if a student enrolled from far end of SLHS boundary, they will probably need to get to the “hub”. If a large group enrolled from closer, I suspect there will be at least a single neighborhood stop, if not more

There are Fox Mill families lobbying to be moved to Skyview. I believe someone report that 45 9th graders from SLHS opted in and I know a good number of 10th graders opted in from SLHS.

If they are not in boundary, there will be an uptick in kids transferring for AP because Skyview is closer to Fox Mill then Herndon.

Who knows.

However, this would explain another reason why Meren did not go to the meeting.

I have said from the beginning that Fox Mill would not be in the boundary because of Meren. She may let all of Floris go, however.

The logical option was-and still is --the one that sent McNair, Coates, Floris, and Oak Hill. It was the only one that makes sense. RIO screwed that up.

It made sense for many reasons--but mostly because it met the requirements for a boundary shift that were stated in the comprehensive boundary study,. Tell me, why would they set those standards for one boundary shift and not another.

Distance, overcrowding, etc. Split feeders are still an issue in this area and will continue to be.
