FCPS has published the western high school boundary map, with four options, summarized below

Option A, Lutes, McNair, Floris, Oak Hill, Crossfield,
Option B, Lutes, McNair, Floris, Oak Hill, Fox Mill
Option C, Lutes, McNair, half of Floris, Oak Hill, Fox Mill, Crossfield (minus Navy exclave around Nestlewood Dr)
Option D, Lutes, McNair, half of Floris, Oak Hill, Fox Mill, Crossfield (including Nestlewood Dr).

I feel option C and D with half of Floris doesn't fly. The residents in Discovery Square literally live across the street from the WHS won't go there? Floris being a split feeder?

The real choice is between A and B, whether Fox Mill or Crossfield being transferred to the Western High School.

Thoughts? Please no discussion of the magnet school BS. Limit to boundaries.

Who calls Coates "Lutes"? It's Lutie Lewis Coates ES.

I'm with you, OP. A and B seem like reasonable choices.

This is already being discussed extensively here: https://www.dcurbanmom.com/jforum/posts/list/2010/1288960.page

Option A is only ~3/4 of Floris. The ~25% that go to SLHS stay at SLHS, and Floris remains a split feeder.

I think you have C and D mixed up. Doesn't D keep the Nestlewood Dr homes at Oakton?

I agree it probably comes down to A or B. Fox Mill to SLHS is closer than Crossfield to Oakton. Not sure how big of a factor distance will be in the decision making. Seems silly to draw new boundaries and leave some with long commutes.

Yes, but with all the magnet discussion. I want there to be a clean discussion about options a/b/c/d

Option B might as well move Crossfield to South Lakes now because that is where they will end up in 5 years anyway if it is chosen. Fox Mill makes more sense to stay at SL and Crossfield in the Western HS.

I understand why you said C and D don’t fly, but I won’t rule them out.

At this stage, it’s all about community input (in other words, politicking and lobbying). If Discovery Square people don’t want to go to the new school (or do not actively communicate to the board even if they want to go to the new school), then the board may choose option C or D.

In fact, options C and D are more likely than options A and B in my opinion since Reid and her team presented two options virtually for the same idea.

The big advantage for C and D in terms of board politics is that these options offer relief to BOTH Oakton and SLHS, while options A and B offer relief to EITHER Oakton or SLHS.

They spent a lot of money for buying this school. I imagine that they would advertise this as a big win for the county that provides releif to many high schools.

I feel like if they took Option C, but swapped the Dulles Discovery community of Floris in and kept Fox Mill at SLHS you might have the most community-centric, transportation relief, and capacity relief solution. Wish they'd run those numbers and explore that...

Option C&D both open the school over capacity. Their target is 2000+

Options A&B give them more wiggle room. IE, Floris could ostensibly all go to KAA in option A, relieving SLHS though leaving Fox Mill behind. And in option B, there’s room to pick up some of Crossfield depending on how the community reacts.

That’s essentially Option A, but with the SLHS portion of Floris sent to KAA. I envision that will be the compromise unless Crossfield pushes for Option B.

Yes agree, just wish they modeled it out to see what capacity would be on that. They seem to be attaching Fox Mill and the SLHS portion of Floris together in each scenario, when there's not true reason to do so. Let the Floris group stick with their peers (Full Disclosure: I am a Floris Parent)

As a Fox Mill parent, who wrote the school board, I think B is most likely. I really hope Fox Mill is moved, if not, I they need to drop IB at SLHS.

This is how I think the process will unfold. People with strong opinions will contact the board members, and that will strongly influence their votes.

If Fox Mill parents don’t communicate, then maybe Option A is the way to go.

If vocal Crossfield parents mobilize and campaign against the move, then Option B will be likely.

If Discovery Square people stay quiet, the board may choose between Options C and D.
