Meren won’t be at the meeting tonight.
Hello community members, As I hope you know, the first meeting is tonight, March 25, from 6:00-7:30pm, at Westfield HS, for the focused process to establish student attendance boundaries for the new Skyview High School. These boundaries would be required for the 2028-29 school year - not required this coming school year in September 2026, and would be opt-in for SY 2027-28. Unfortunately, neither I nor my staff are able to attend this meeting. This meeting was only announced to the public and Board just one week ago. As important as this boundary work is, I had previous commitments elsewhere in the community - at the other end of the Hunter Mill district - that I am choosing to keep. I have reviewed the slides that will be presented this evening, and I see that the bulk of the content is about the boundary process, which I am very familiar with, given the last 18 months of work on the comprehensive process. However, I want to share this summary of three expected Board actions regarding Skyview that are to occur by/in June 2026, to establish: Attendance boundary Phasing of students- that is, which grades will be added to this new school in the coming years and who will eventually be required to attend per the boundary set; currently only 9th and 10th grade years are confirmed to begin in SY 26-27 with opt-in placement. The Superintendent had proposed phase in plans for the 27-28 and 28-29 school years, but those have not yet been confirmed by the Board. Transportation provided to students regarding the phasing. I am particularly concerned about this, because the majority of the Board did not honor phasing allowed per our boundary policy nor bus service per our transportation policy for the comprehensive boundary change voted on in January 2026 - in essence, not fulfilling the promise of phasing. I am keeping a very close eye on this, and I encourage you to seek clarity from the Superintendent at every opportunity. While the Board in recent months has considered phasing and transportation for Skyview, a new and distinct decision is needed for the above for Skyview. There will be more community meetings in April and May, and I am eager to attend those to hear what you’re hearing and engage. In the meantime, please contact me if I can be helpful or if you’d like to share updates. I hope you have an enjoyable spring break. Sincerely, Melanie
