Western High School Boundary Map options (A/B/C/D)

Skyview will be full once there are boundaries and therefore closed to transfers. It’s a small
School.

My kid is from Oak Hill/Chantilly pyramid so worst case, he is biking, but I would feel bad if the kids from Fox Mill who are at RCMS didn't get transportation to Skyview after opting in. This whole thing has been like a Knives Out Netfllix series but since we are walking distance I've been a lot more willing to roll the dice. But I do hope our kids friends who opted in get transport for at least the four years they committed to.

Who knows.

However, this would explain another reason why Meren did not go to the meeting.

I have said from the beginning that Fox Mill would not be in the boundary because of Meren. She may let all of Floris go, however.

The logical option was-and still is --the one that sent McNair, Coates, Floris, and Oak Hill. It was the only one that makes sense. RIO screwed that up.

It made sense for many reasons--but mostly because it met the requirements for a boundary shift that were stated in the comprehensive boundary study,. Tell me, why would they set those standards for one boundary shift and not another.

Distance, overcrowding, etc. Split feeders are still an issue in this area and will continue to be.

How would Oakton parents “screw up” boundary changes that only move kids from Chantilly and Westfield to Skyview and other Chantilly and Centreville kids to Westfield?

If the boundaries only include four ES feeders there could be plenty of pupil placements for AP and pathways programs. That may be what Reid wants even if Meren doesn’t.

Who is Meren and what role do they play?

Should have included Crossfield in that list. I think that was Option A--the most logical solution that made the most sense. Sorry, my bad. Most of Crossfield should be at Skyview. They could send all those kids on the east (north?) side of Reston Parkway go to South Lakes since Fox Mill Woods is already there. Send Franklin Farm and Navy Island to Skyview along with all of Floris. The loss to South Lakes from Floris kids could be made up by those on the northeast side of Reston Parkway

The School Board rep for SLHS who doesn't want to lose any students to Skyview. She is petrified that SLHS scores will drop if it loses Floris and Fox Mill, both of who have a large population of parents who want to move to Skyview. She has been ghosting the Fox Mill PTA since October. Crossfield or Fox Mill were under discussion only because they are small schools whose populations would get Skyview to close to 2,000 students. I don't believe their are similarly sized ES that are at Chantilly or Westfield to make up that number of kids. The numbers of students lost would not significantly diminish SLHS or Oakton. Meren and SLHS knows that they fought hard to force Floris and Fox Mill into SLHS 20 some years ago to improve test scores and are afraid of what will happen if they lose those populations. It is that simple.

Crossfield has a very vocal opposition to moving from Oakton. Fox Mill is split on the move but a significant number of rising 9th graders opted into to Skyview. I have no clue how many kids from Crossfield opted in.

Fox Mill:
South Lakes is not at capacity. Losing Fox Mill is problematic for South Lakes
Parts of Fox Mill are closer to Skyview and parts are closer to South Lakes. Neither is far from either school.

Crossfield:
Oakton is a very long and difficult commute. It requires either winding, hilly roads or I 66. Skyview is significantly closer--and is very close for much of the Crossfield membership.
Oakton is at capacity and is slated to grow. It could soon be overcrowded.

This. I would add Meren came out and did say she was pro the SLHS portion of Floris moving.

Reid and the School Board allowed themselves to get pushed around by loud parents in the just-completed county-wide review.

If they behave the same way again there are enough Oakton parents who vocally oppose moving to Skyview to probably get their way.

That suggests they’ll either move Fox Mill or just start Skyview off with four feeders and invite pupil placements. Meren may want to keep Fox Mill at South Lakes, but she doesn’t have veto rights and she’s not part of the ruling junta on the School Board. On the other hand, Reid may hope that pupil placements will boost Skyview’s test scores and overall profile.

Skyview's test scores will be just fine.

They’d be boosted if there are families making the effort to pupil place their kids there.

Your definition of “pushed around” is vastly different than ours. Just sounds like sour grapes.

Well, they are claiming (again) that they are going to be guided by the factors in their boundary policy when crafting the boundaries for Skyview, but they just deferred to those who yelled the loudest last time.

Sounds like you don’t like accountability.
