Petitioning them for what?

Making murder double-illegal?

What could've prevented this? Answer: nothing.

You can't go around locking up mentally ill people because you're scared of them, or think they *might* do something one day, but so far haven't.

Until people prove themselves a danger, we cannot as a society punish or confine them. We just can't.

Sometimes the first time they prove they're a danger, it's something like yesterday. That's unfortunate. But it's a rarity, not the rule. Most of the time they start with less serious things, and we need to identify and intervene rapidly when these people with these traits present themselves. But you simply cannot jail people preemptively.

Personally, I'd like to see every republican and self identified conservative confined to prison camps or exiled somewhere or frankly just disposed of. But I'm a minority opinion holder in that regard (at least for now). And I have to respect the views of those who profess that we should maintain a more civil discourse on this, for as long as the dominant opinion is that way. Same with how we handle the mentally ill, ironically.

We can't just lock them up. It's wrong. It costs us our humanity if we do that. It allows the worse side of our nature to win, and we can't do that.

You personally would like to see the half of all voters who disagree with your liberal policies sent to prison? That's some nice, non-devivise attitude right there.

Petitioning them to lock up and treat the violently insane , or even just the insane who can't care for themselves. And please stop throwing out red herrings "sometimes it's the first time they did something like this". ok can't stop that one. But THIS guy was considered a threat by his psychiatric team when he was committed before, and it was our own da office that freed him. Read the Post article and get back to me.

As if the story couldn’t get any worse apparently when they caught him, before they even mentioned what he was being charged with he said something about “stabbing a little girl.” Martinez was like 5 feet tall and 100 pounds. He may have thought she was a kid.

A kid in sports gear, running at 8 pm at night all by herself? Not likely.
My gut is telling me this was not a random act.

You should take this opportunity to not gamble, PP.

Martinez (and everyone else in the area) should have gone jogging with pepper spray in her hand, ready to go.

I cannot see any other way to save yourself if a crazy guy attacks you with a knive.

You really think someone stabs you, and you're going to have the awareness to pull out your pepper spray fast enough from wherever it was, and correctly aim--and press it-- directly at a dude? Instead of maybe clutching your wounds? Sorry, that's not going to happen.

The only way for this to have been prevented (and similar attacks), is for men to just not take out their sh!t on random women and people.

See how long you last walking down a the street muttering threats with a knife in a police state. DC specifically has some reasonable and legitimate crime strategies we could put in place - LEGISLATING hospitalisation of the mentally ill (it is going to come out that this guy had MULTIPLE warning signs), reducing our revolving door youth adjudication in DC specifically (responsible for nuisance crimes that escalate to serious violence , often in already traumatized neighborhoods) and the need for clear CCTV operated by the city- we have traffic cams to make money every third light, but for real crime I'm so tired of grainy business surveillance videos that good defense lawyers can make a hash out of.

This is an excellent point. So much is acceptable in DC that would not be tolerated in many other US cities.

I'm the PP who wants to move home (born and raised in HK). I have travelled widely across the US and notice that in the downtown areas of any major US city (LA, Phoenix, Atlanta, Philly, etc.), homeless people will be there openly. There are homeless people too in Asia, but they wont be screaming and harassing people. Rather, they're actually working but cant afford rent. They aren't as visible and you still feel safe. Good luck feeling the same in the US.

I don't think he thought it was a kid, just the way he talks. It's just incredibly sad and senseless.
