It happened before 8:00PM. That's really not late, especially in such a popular dining neighborhood. There would have been plenty of people around. Be safe out there, ladies.

This is one of the saddest stories. I hate it when everyone tries to tell us what she could have done differently to save herself. It is literally a fear that the majority of us have...being killed in a volent way and knowing that we could have been her and ended the same way.

I heard she is being buried in her wedding dress. How sad and I feel for her family!

Holy wow that is so sad.

I doubt that considering she just got engaged a week before her death.

You doubt is incorrect. If only you did a little research on your own you would find out this information:

So many DCUMers are such scum.

You need to let go this idea that there was a way she could have saved herself. I know this protects us but, sometimes there is nothing you can do. When people like you this say this it sounds like you are blaming the victim. If only she had mace! If only she wasn't jogging that way!

It is sad, it is unfortunate and nothing the jogger could have done to prevent it. Only the killer could have done that.

You may want to talk to a Psychiatrist.

There's a lot we could do differently to reduce the probability of such a hateful and stupid murder.

First, the Mayor should explain why that crazy guy was freely roaming the streets, and why the same won't happen next time.

Second, we need to discuss what potential victims can do to defend themselves. Karate classes? Pepper spray? A gun?

I think it is you who needs the doc. What are you going to do when a man comes up and stabs you in the neck? Karate wouldn't save anyone but, keep fooling yourself.

I'm afraid you missed the First point up there, and also the open second question.

Aren't you ashamed to be alive and shouting such BS while Wendy is buried?

You are one of the unhinged we should be worried about! Why would I be ashamed? I am one of many who is saddened by her death. You can talk to the mayor, you can take karate you can do whatever you want but Wendy is still dead unfortunately and yelling at me to "see a psychiatrist" or "be ashamed" will not bring her back. If it can happen to her it can happen to anyone.

Speaking of ignoring you ignored my total point. Kettle meet pot.

I have a black belt in Taekwondo, was in the military and worked for a private military company in a war zone. I boxed and kickbox. And as a frequent jogger I am a "potential victim" as you say. Karate, pepper spray, and guns wont stop a determined attacker. Unfortunately, if someone stabs you unexpectedly, it's done. And you can't preemptively attack everyone who looks like they might hurt you. Even the rules of engagement in a warzone require that you confirm they are armed and attacking you. You just can't shoot everyone who looks funny.

The issue is that sane, law abiding citizens are at a huge disadvantage when encountering violent criminals. These people don’t have a problem shooting you in the back, stabbing you when you don’t see it coming or knocking you out when you aren’t looking and simply stealing your shit. These criminals don’t want to face off; often times you/we are just between them and getting whatever they want.

This girl was no different than any one of us. Sure we can keep our heads on a swivel, pay attention to our surroundings, carry a gun, knife, mace, etc, but at the end of the day a woman lost her life at the hands of a violent criminal playing behind his own rules

“But through his grief, he would press on. For her.

His friends helped him think of ways to preserve Martinez’s legacy. For years, she’d discussed her dreams of wanting to help and empower women in both D.C. and Latin America.

They would do whatever it took to keep her vision alive.

First, it was the establishment of the Wendy K. Martinez Scholarship fund at her alma mater, Florida Atlantic University. Partially funded by a GoFundMe set up in Martinez’s name, the scholarship will be awarded to Latina students in the Wilkes Honors College who demonstrate a commitment to social impact for Latin Americans or immigrants in the United States.

Later would come the Wendy Martinez Legacy Project, announced Nov. 13 by FiscalNote — a District-based tech startup where Martinez served as chief of staff. FiscalNote donated $500,000 and stock shares into the fund, which will go toward advancing women in the technology sector, women empowerment programs, and community-building through running.

“We had such a clear vision of what she wanted to do, what she liked, what she aspired to be, that it wasn’t even a conversation,” Hincapie said. “We all had this notion of ‘this is what she would have wanted.’?”

Next year they plan to host runs for women’s safety in D.C. and Florida, Hincapie said.

“She might not be physically here, but who she was and what she represented will remain,” he said. “And will win. And will illuminate the lives of many other people.”

Eh I don't think so. It's one block from Logan Circle, The Bird, 3 blocks from 14th St and Whole Foods. I mean - it's definitely a gentrified part of the city and has all of the tension and turmoil that comes along with that, but I don't think "creepy part of the city" is really the right characterization.
