This is an interesting development. Colombia said they wouldn’t take back their own citizens so Trump is enacting tariffs and other measures.

Personally, I think this is a great move. It is the responsibility of the host nation to repatriate their citizens. I do not understand why Colombia won’t welcome their own people back.

They don’t have any issues taking their migrants back. They are demanding they are returned on civilian flights like humans.

To me, that’s a fair ask.

Why don't they (Colombia) pay for these flights then? THAT would be fair

"Colombia's Petro condemned the practice on Sunday, suggesting it treated migrants like criminals. In a post on social media platform X, Petro said Colombia would welcome home deported migrants on civilian planes."
As for who pays:
1. the US does not pay when US citizens are repatriated, it's a 90 day loan that has to be paid back
2. Are you suggesting Colombia is supposed to require exit visas the way Saudi Arabia, Russia, Belarus, and Qatar do? Or all the former Soviet bloc countries?

I'm suggesting that if he demands that his citizens get back a certain way, he should pay for it. It's not like the US can expect the deportees to pay back their flight cost once back in Colombia

Sweet summer child. You think other countries respect Trump? Go read a non-American newspaper.
I know they don’t, thats the point. They will pay instead. We don’t need their f*ing coffee, lots of countries export this.

Here’s the issue. As an employer I’m not allowed to question documents even if I suspect they’re false. I’m also not allowed to not hire someone based on those suspicions. You can’t make an example of me simply because my defense would be "how was I supposed to know". You can’t sue a business for questioning documents and blame them for not questioning them at the same time.

This is beautiful!

You realize we can just choose a different coffee right? That’s the point, people won’t pay it, and they will suffer.

I was not aware coffee was a necessity.

Yeah but I’m sure all of the coffee shops and cafes that sell it won’t appreciate it.

Then they will lose business. Or purchase their coffee elsewhere.

The world isn’t static- you should embrace change!

Of course they will lose business and some will go under and their employees will now be unemployed.. sounds not worth it just to bully Columbia.

COLOMBIA...with two O's.

Not only can't the PP spell "Colombia," the stupid MAGA White House can't either. Minor point but it just goes to show that they're ignorant AND they don't run their written products by a copyeditor. So sloppy.

It's a problem on both sides dear. A liberal PP upthread also spelled it "Columbia" and of course attributed it to autocorrect.

Employers are not allowed to question employment documents by law. What will you accuse them of, following the law?

Something to consider if you care about consumer prices...

Colombias gas exports have been decreasing yearly due to a host of issues. That’s while US shale is increasing, and hopefully increasing faster with a new regulatory environment.

Africa makes great coffee and I’ll gladly pay $3 a pound more to remove illegal migrants from our country.

Let me guess: You live in, what, Ohio? Do you know a single undocumented immigrant? Have you ever met an immigrant from Columbia? Would you know what an immigrant from Columbia looked like? Would you know anything about that immigrant, that is, if you know any immigrants?

Your ignorance = cruelty.

Get out and meet some undocumented immigrants. Talk to them. Find out what they have endured in their lives.

Now, compare their experiences (grinding poverty, violence unimaginable to you or to anyone you know) to your cushy, comfortable, safe life.

Once you've done that, please get back to me.

Do YOU know what a Colombian looks like? If so then surely you know they come in all colors and features.

What do their experiences and hardships have to do with anything? Having a hard life doesn't mean you get to walk or fly into another country and decide to stay without permission! It doesn't matter if they are nice, poor, a baseball coach, nice woman/man, etc.

I do. And I see the overseas political leaders accepting Trump. Surprisingly quickly. They know the game has changed. They live in reapolitik, not you.

I mean essentially the liberal position of wide open immigration is based on having good feels, which is nice, but it's bad governance.

So, since you are so anti immigration, why would you hire someone you suspect is illegal? What is he gonna do, sue you for discrimination? I think you are full of shit

Oh the horror!

You don’t care about small businesses being affected by tariffs?

I care more about how illegal immigrants have placed such a drain on our economy.

We know. You keep telling us every minute. Do you have any other concerns or interests in life?

The PP has no idea what she is talking about. (She's probably posting from Russia.)

Immigrants pay taxes. They take jobs that Americans won't take. They add so much money TO our economy.

The right-wing oligarchy is spreading this smear campaign of lies about immigrants draining our economy to hide the fact that the oligarchy is the actual drain on our economy!! They are stealing us blind right beneath our noses.

The immigrants are keeping our economy going.

The right-wing won't deport a fraction of the number they claim they will because to do so will crash the US economy.

Those deportations won't happen, except to a few hundred thousand poor undocumented souls, most of whom will keep trying until they get into the US.

And when they get here, they will find jobs because America needs workers.

Illegal immigrants are not paying taxes. Get it through your head.

They pay BILLIONS in taxes and to the SS/Medicare funds without seeing any of that back.

They get back far more back than they pay in.

I went to Portugal this past summer and also paid taxes, does that make me eligible to live there?

Paying taxes and dropping babies does not equal citizenship.

You paid income and retirement fund taxes in Portugal? Did you pay for health coverage too?
