How many of you cut off your MAGA relatives?

What Vance expressed to the friendly Claremont audience was a dramatically reduced vision of American citizenship. It’s one in which having ancestors who have lived here for generations entitles you to more; a vision of citizenship that’s long existed around the world, with a notable and aspirational exception in the United States.
...
Vance: "I think the people whose ancestors fought in the Civil War have a hell of a lot more claim over America than the people who say they don’t belong,” he concluded.

What if their ancestors fought for slavery? We want to reward that right?

Do you see the double standards?

Where is the double standards? Those people came that way, without valid ID, they are leaving the same way, without showing ID. Same standard.

Are you being deliberately obtuse? A) you don't know that they all came here with no ID. B) it's a plane, you show id regardless. and C) ID is important b/c they are disappearing citizens and people here legally.

These are humans not some sub-species. So they should absolutely be treated the same. And it's gross for you not to see that.

A) If they came here with a valid ID, nothing prevents them from showing it at the boarding, correct? These are the IDs acceptable at the boarding for domestic flights:
State-issued Enhanced Driver's License (EDL) or Enhanced ID (EID)
U.S. passport
U.S. passport card
DHS trusted traveler cards (Global Entry, NEXUS, SENTRI, FAST)
U.S. Department of Defense ID, including IDs issued to dependents
Permanent resident card
Border crossing card
An acceptable photo ID issued by a federally recognized Tribal Nation/Indian Tribe, including Enhanced Tribal Cards (ETCs)
HSPD-12 PIV card
Foreign government-issued passport
Canadian provincial driver's license or Indian and Northern Affairs Canada card
Transportation Worker Identification Credential (TWIC)
U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services Employment Authorization Card (I-766)
U.S. Merchant Mariner Credential
Veteran Health Identification Card (VHIC)

If any of those people arrived to US with any of those types of ID, as you claimed, then all what it takes is to show it to ICE in order to be released (presuming that a foreign issued passport has a valid US visa).

B) If they have a proper ID, they should show it. The problem is that these people don't have the required ID. How do you propose for them to fix it?

C) ID is very important!!! BUT they cannot get it in US, they need to go back to their home country and obtain one of those IDs that are listed above. There is no other way for them to obtain the required IDs in US.

It’s way beyond politics. Anyone who is contributing to the demise of our democracy does not get my love or friendship,

Still wierd, they're your family. After COVID with relatives lost, I'd never want to push anyone away.

It’s not “weird” to be on a completely different moral ground and not be able to look someone in the face anymore, family or not. The whole world is watching and very clearly sees what is happening here. Out country is falling and MAGA is just filled with glee to “own the libs” I would have cut off nazi family back in WW2 as well.

I'm a proud irredeemable deplorable.

Stand by for your deprogramming.

This is not a flex.

We thought so too, but Hillary continued to flexing it.

DP and I’m lucky that my traditional conservative family members are intelligent and empathetic enough to have recognized the danger of the MAGA cult as of J6, so I haven’t had to cut anyone out. They are now independents who don’t necessarily support all democrat political views, but they recognize the need to vote against falling into further authoritarianism.

But if your “political” views involve supporting a party who refuses to denounce slurs and Nazi/rape jokes because it’s just kids being kids, you are okay with masked ICE agents grabbing people off the street without a warrant or ID, and you think Charlie Kirk’s racist and misogynistic rants are some sort of intellectual commentary, then this goes deeper into your underlying morals.

And I find the morals of MAGA to be so abhorrent that I will protect my peace by not keeping them in my life (I have some friends/colleagues I’ve distanced myself from without any fanfare). Maybe they feel the same about me. I am confident in my values though that I am going whine about how stupid and mean it is if they cut me off. Good riddance.

Makes sense that Republicans, devoid of competence or merit, would judge a person worthy exclusively based on what they were given by someone else.
Nepotism is all they have.

What if their ancestors invaded and massacred the native citizens of ancient heritage?

The Republican view on immigration is that immigration is OK if you murder everyone who arrived before you. So.....

Calling MAGA deplorable isn't a flex. It's an apt description of a group of hate-fueled people without morals or decency who support fascism and enjoy the suffering of others.

Figures MAGA can only think of ridiculous attempts at flexing. You exist in a shallow world devoid of critical thinking. It's all a race to the bottom making weak attempts at "owning the libs" etc as you go.

My mother did everything for us, whatever we needed. I should have anticipated this as the MAGAs were the same with my bil mother.

We were at a wedding recently and I couldn’t even look at them. What a disappointment they are. They suck up every hate filled lie that comes out of Trumps mouth.

For several years, the democrats put illegal aliens ahead of citizens.

Closed schools and after school activities to house illegal immigrants.

Pumped up funds to hotels at tax payer expense to house them (in massive quantities).

Insisted on govt employees and contractors getting covid shots to keep their jobs while allowing those crossing the border we not required to have them. The key word was immigrants were "vaccine eligible".

Two different standards. One for immigrants and one for second class citizens.

What a disappointment democrats are. Now they're feeling the sting of it. Sorry, not sorry.

A prime example of the type of person, lost in a web of MAGA lies and conspiracy theories, that we are all avoiding. Who wants to be around a person who is delusional and mean?

But love for my family and my desire for my children to grow up near grandparents, aunts, uncles and cousins is far stronger than anything else. Teach your kids that people have different values and different opinions, and that we don't slice out of our lives people who have different perspectives.

I know you mean well but this is a very good example of privilege. My children are biracial so no I will not have them around family members who lie and say Jan 6 was BLM and antifa or that the proud boys and unite the right rally are good things. You dont love me or my partner or children if you support politicians/polices/lies that threaten their safety and deny them basic humanity. This is not an intellectual exercise for many people. These are our lives.

DP. My children are also biracial and the URM side of the family is MAGA (or at least Trump voters), largely due to religious beliefs.

Never had anything said or done that threatens their safety or denied their basic humanity.

YMMV

Are you the white parent? As a biracial woman myself, trust me when I tell you, your children have a different racial experience than you. They feel and notice things that you do not, that you cannot. And a time will likely come where they inform you that they have absolutely experienced racism from your MAGA family. And they will spend lots of money on therapy coming to terms with the fact that their own parent cared more about keeping the peace with these people than protecting them.

PP said it was the URM side of the family who is MAGA. PP says it’s based on religious beliefs so you can guess which URM they are talking about. So no the MAGA side isn’t being racist, they are the URMs!

+1000

Just stop with the myth of MAGA is racist. Tons of BIPOC people voted for trump. Latinx people voted for trump. Even LGTBQIA++ people support trump.

Trump had more black voters this time than any republican in the last 30 years. This concept that he does not welcome or appeal to minorities is not supported by the data.

More of few is still not much. Most people of color vote against Republicans, just as they did for Trump. And the reason for that is the known racism that underlies their policies and is prevalent in their rhetoric. Anyone voting for this and pretending it has nothing to do with racism is a disingenuous liar.

But but but we were told by a previous poster that Republicans aren't racist at all! https://www.politico.com/news/2025/10/14/private-chat-among-young-gop-club-members-00592146

And we’ve been told repeatedly that the campus protesters are just advocating for peace in the ME, but Students for Justice in Palestine just tweeted “Death to all collaborators”.

Does that mean that all the keffiyeh kids are terrorists?

Let’s be consistent, shall we?

It starts from the top so start there . . . acknowledge the hateful, violent, racist, nasty sh-- that comes from trump (and others in MAGA and in his administration). No one on the right has done that yet and you have no credibility until you do.

“You”? I’m not a Trumper. Despise him.

But don’t despise those who voted for him.

That distinction is the crux of this thread.

I think the best path forward is to understand and win over enough Trump voters to win future elections. And I don’t believe that shunning will accomplish that.

Others here apparently disagree and feel that their unambiguous and uncompromising moral certitude, righteousness and condescension will magically make things better.

I disagree.

+1 so very true

Well, Wise Ones, please explain how to deprogram the MAGA cult and all the people who believe the propaganda of the GOP. We are waiting.

Understand, persuade, compromise, divide/conquer, etc., etc.

In other words, politic effectively.

Shunning/ranting/despising and otherwise vomiting negative emotions while wearing the mantle of self-righteousness? Don’t think that’s likely to accomplish much—Trump has already cornered that market.

How many MAGA relatives do you have. Have you actually had a conversation with one? Tried reason and facts to no avail.

It's a cult. They need next-level deprogramming and it's not going to happen while they continue to feed off of the Faux News teat.

That's your opinion, and it is absolutely a political one.

I know that is easier for you to justify but it's really not political. At least not solely political. There are definite moral and integrity issues with Trump and his supporters. (NP).

I believe it is totally OK and normal that people have different moral standards. Some people believe it is morally OK to marry minor, to have several wives, to mutiliate female genitals, etc. But for some people is morally wrong to sleep with the same sex partner, etc. US, as a melting pot, have to embrace all the people. Why are you against other's cultures, morals and believes?

Are you saying this as someone supporting MAGA because you believe women should not be allowed to have a first trimester abortion and or take Plan B, or that businesses should be allowed to refuse to make cakes for same sex weddings? As someone who thinks people should lose jobs if they aren’t sufficiently upset about Charlie Kirk?

Republicans aren’t the party of “respect all beliefs”. They are the party of having the government make my beliefs illegal shove your (morally repugnant) beliefs down my throat.

Plus, if you are okay with a felon rapist pedophile POTUS, and can excuse rape and pedophilia and Hitler/rape/gas chamber You NG Republican “jokes” because Cult MAGA, I don’t want to be anywhere near you. You are morally reprehensible and I chose not to force myself to be understanding of (or talk to) people who loudly and proudly excuse behavior that destroys the lives of the most vulnerable people in society.

I certainly don’t want you near my kids. Your movement homeschooling so your kids aren’t exposed to my beliefs. But you don’t think I have the right to protect my kids from exposure to people who excuse young Republican boys rape fantasies as “boys will be boys”? Rape and pedophila hurt a lot more people than Girls Who Code clubs.

Adults don’t need to explain their major life choices to anyone.

MAGA attracts people with personality disorders and abusive people. Notice how many J6ers had family member eager to turn them in. Notice how many were later picked up for child p0rn and domestic violence. Notice how many had a history of these before J6.

These people were not liked on the family before Trump, and now that they’re in a cult, their family has simply given up on them. Because they cannot be reached.

Stop watching your Fox News garbage. Many of the migrants housed using FEMA funds were here lawfully seeking asylum or pending other immigration proceedings. From a humanitarian standpoint and for the benefit of local residents, it is better to have a place to house them than leaving them out on the streets or cramming into slums. If you disagree with the current asylum and immigration process, then this is something that is the responsibility of congress to fix.

I’m not saying democrats have done a perfect job on handling everything. But one easy solution to reduce unlawful immigration would be to enforce eVerify and go after the companies who employ undocumented immigrants. But that would upset donors and so it’s easier to just vilify poor, mostly brown, people instead.

Also the reason most people are upset about tax dollars being used to help migrants is the sense of unfairness because why are citizens not being given the same help? But democrats want to also help citizens better afford things like healthcare instead of providing tax breaks to the wealthy. I will truly never understand why someone who gets upset over an undocumented immigrant being given emergency treatment (due to EMTALA) instead of left to bleed out on the sidewalk isn’t upset about someone like Musk infiltrating government and awarding his own companies federal grants without having to contractually compete?

Also the school closures in NY were migrant schools closed to create emergency winter housing. It was not ideal as it disrupted the education of migrant children, but let’s not pretend like you’re wildly concerned about their wellbeing.

Re: the COVID vaccine mandates, that was challenged and lost in court. The Biden administration followed the court’s ruling and backtracked on it unlike the current administration which thinks they have plenary power and that judges cannot control Trump’s use of the military.
