Yes. Nothing yet but it sounds like Senate Democrats want to cave.

Why do you think that from that article? Sounds to me like there will be a shut down, at least for a few days, til GOP agrees to fund the ACA.

If they agree to a Continuing Resolution, without their healthcare demands, the American public suffers from that healthcare decision, and the Democrats are seen as weakened, again.

But if they push the nation to a federal shutdown, the White House can choose to fund only those parts of the government that align with their MAGA ideology anyway, so the healthcare demands will be shot either way. The White House could make good on its threat to lay off thousands of additional workers, but it will lead to political blow back for the GOP.

Which means that unlike for other shutdown threats, and despite the important government work and services that will grind to a halt, the Democrats might find that a painful shutdown is in their best interest politically, but also in the best long-term interest of the nation, to force the White House to come to the negotiating table after public outcry, and not let the GOP have it all their own way.

so the dems want to make the case to extend the covid era aca temporary subsidies that are supposed to expire after the pandemic? There is no pandemic, what exactly is the logic here? Makes no sense, they should make a better case.

As part of COVID-19 relief legislation, the Biden administration temporarily expanded eligibility for ACA health insurance subsidies and increased the financial assistance for people at lower incomes who were already eligible under the ACA.

Which was a wonderful thing to do, since Americans badly need cheaper healthcare. The government managed to pass that under Covid, but there are very good reasons to make them permanent. I am all for it.

I don't see why you'd be against it, PP. So many rural whites cannot afford healthcare. This is why the GOP could never destroy "Obamacare" - their constituents loved it. Instead of pouring billions into ICE throwing out old Indian grandmothers who have paid all their taxes, built a small business, benefited their community and done nothing criminal (happened recently), maybe the government should save American lives by focusing on their health.

should we continue to hand out tax credits, refunds and stimulus even though its not covid anymore? WILD!

“ House Democrats have publicly and privately fretted that Senate Democrats could reverse course and vote to advance GOP-backed funding legislation after most House Democrats opposed it. Helping fuel that concern, several Senate Democrats have sidestepped questions over the past week about what they might do if Republicans moved toward formal negotiations on the Obamacare subsidies.”

Interestingly, that paragraph isn't in the current version of the article.

In case it wasn't clear, the House Democrats have been concerned that Schumer will cave again. They don't want him to.

The main sticking point is over extending the ACA tax credit.

To be perfectly clear, this has absolutely nothing to do with illegal aliens, and it is not "insane" or "radical" as Republicans have constantly been framing it.

The House reconvenes Tuesday at noon. I think there will be a Kabuki Theatre shutdown as the Republicans wait to see if Gillibrand can get the eight Dems necessary to break the filibuster. With Schumer sympathetic but needing to fend off AOC’s primary challenge, she’ll run out of time.

Republicans will then revise the House CR to say OK we’ll discuss the subsidies. That’s enough for Schumer and they’ll pass the CR in time for everyone to be back at work by Friday, or Monday if they want to give a long weekend.

PP you replied to. I would be against that. But for healthcare specifically, since the US is by far the country with the worse health outcomes amongst rich nations... yes, we do need to do better for Americans' health.

No, they won't do the subsidies. Trump and Vought are itching to shut down the government so they can blame Dems and trigger mass layoffs.

Whatever they do, they won’t be in town on Friday or Monday. Laziest people ever!

Of course they’re not going to do the subsidies. I said the Republicans would revise the CR to say that they will discuss the subsidies. That’s all they need to do to get a cave.

Shut it down.

Make my stupid white rural high school buddies feel the whip of their Trump worship.

They are relying on those subsidies.

But like everything else that was passed in the spring, what is to prevent more recissions and going back on 'deals"?

Nothing.

So why agree to anything?

That would be a stupid thing to cave on. Republicans can't be trusted. But I can see them itching to pull a Lucy yanking the football away as Charlie (Schumer) Brown runs up to kick it.
