In the 2019 shutdown, 7 of 12 appropriations bills were passed. For the 5 bills that were not passed, about 1/4 of the federal government was not funded and shutdown, largely executive branch agencies. The 7 appropriations bills that passed included funding for the military, Congress, intelligence and judiciary and postal services. This time the Freedom Caucus has refused to budge on any of the 12 appropriations bills, so we are currently looking at a total federal government shutdown except for exempted and essential employees and services. The mainstream Republicans need to open negotiations with the Democrats and block the Freedom Caucus and get some bills passed. This is going to cost the federal government many billions of dollars if they let this small group of less than 25 people hold the nation and government hostage. |
Depends on where in the pay cycle things start back up. Anywhere from 2-3 weeks. And then good luck making sure it’s accurate. I’m almost certain I was underpaid and never got to the bottom of it. |
Depends on the agency and payroll provider, in 2019 we got our back pay within a few days of reopening. |
It really is terrible that people who are just trying to do work on behalf of the public get screwed around like this. |
My DH switched agencies 2 months ago and 3 paychecks in and they are still wrong- by a considerable amount. I am begging him to try and escalate to get it fixed before the shutdown because they already owe us for the difference AND cant imagine the problems with back pay since he is essential. |
well you can think about it - but we won't really know until late next week |
Whether he’s excepted/essential or not shouldn’t affect the issue with his pay, since once the shutdown ends everybody will be paid as though they were in duty status the entire time. |
We were told our office will not shut down and we will still get paid at the expected times. We have alternate funding and I guess the payroll people are essential? |
Is leave retroactively applied as well? |
Yes. |
They ve it as fast as they can. 2013 was my last one, and they paid people backpay within a few days. They did not wait until the end of the pay cycle and tack it on. |
Correct, but the pay amount is currently wrong and they already owe us the difference. Its been 6 weeks so I can only imagine his back pay would be incorrect as well if it isnt corrected before the shutdown. For example, the government owes us for health insurance premiums that they deducted but he was not enrolled. |
Yes. We agree that your husband should come first, before all of the lower paying federal workers who will be unable to pay their bills. ![]() |
I did not say that ...... My original comment was that hes already being paid the wrong amount and if its not changed beforehand in the system his back pay would be the wrong amount. If a shutdown happens and he doesnt get paid, we also would not be able to pay our bills...are you daft? And we are already missing 1k from his salary. Its extremely frustrating to think of federal workers not getting paid out of no fault of their own. Also, how would you even know that he is a higher-paid individual. That 1k matters to us and our bills so we arent exactly raking it in over here. ![]() |
Ill add that if he has to go in its worse because of gas and other commuting costs. Id much rather him not have to work while not getting paid and go do others jobs- either household or something like substitute teaching, which is what a few of my ex-teacher now-fed employee friends plan to do. |
