DP. I think she’s referring to the Spanish flu waves. The first was small, then around November there was a big peak, then it went way down again in January/February, then a small third wave (bigger than the first, much smaller than the second) hit in March, ... then the graphs end, so I guess that’s when the pandemic “ended” and the Spanish flu became the flu. |

Any good news today?

The US has vaccinated 19% of Americans and another 29% have had COVID. Assuming some people who have had covid also got vaccinated, and people who had COVID have lost immunity....we are probably looking at 33% of Americans who have immunity. That percent increases 1-2 points every week with bigger jumps (3%) starting in April.

And this obviously is in the face of the UK variant.
"Based on the latest data, scientists in England estimate that hospitalization and death rates will fall around 75 percent in those who receive a single dose of the BioNTech/Pfizer vaccine. And this may be an "underestimate," according to Mary Ramsay, head of immunization at Public Health England, since the analysis included people vaccinated 14 days ago and therefore doesn't measure the four weeks it takes to fully account for the increase in protection, especially in older people. Limiting data to more than four weeks ago “would see an even more profound drop,” she said." https://www.politico.eu/article/uk-coronavirus-vaccines-cutting-hospitalization-and-death-rates/ |

SIAP, huge news out of Israel.
https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2021-02-21/pfizer-biontech-shot-stops-covid-s-spread-israeli-study-shows The vaccine, which is being rolled out in a national immunization program that began Dec. 20, was 89.4% effective at preventing laboratory-confirmed infections, according to a copy of a draft publication that was posted on Twitter and confirmed by a person familiar with the work. The companies worked with Israel’s Health Ministry on the preliminary observational analysis, which wasn’t peer-reviewed. Some scientists disputed its accuracy. |

More on Pfizer vaccine
First real-world coronavirus vaccine data in Britain show decline in infections, hospitalizations after first dose "In the first study to describe the nationwide effectiveness of two vaccines, researchers in Scotland reported Monday that both the first doses of the Pfizer-BioNTech and Oxford-AstraZeneca shots greatly reduced hospital admissions from covid-19 among the elderly — by up to 85 percent and 94 percent, respectively." https://www.washingtonpost.com/world/europe/covid-vaccines-protection-uk/2021/02/22/216b1dac-751a-11eb-9489-8f7dacd51e75_story.html |
