Congratulations! Any merit received, or does that come later?

Thanks everyone. Its a bit overwhelming. Like the other poster, when I saw the jump in the number of applications coupled with the fact that UC needed extra time to process all the ED/EA applications, I was sure DC would not get in.

I doubt there will be any merit aid- DC applied ED. But we planned for this and saved so DC could have the option to go where ever. A big gift, I know, but we will be fine, even though we do not have what would be considered high incomes around the DMV.

I'm trying not to out DC on this public board, but I guess some can figure it out who it is, just as I have in the past from other postings. As an obsessive reader of this board and occasional poster, its been nice to hear the positive comments. Thanks!

In case you are worried, my DD knows your kid well enough that she had already heard about this acceptance. I confirmed with her the stats & she said, Oh, it's definitely my friend. So, I would have had no idea just from your post! It's just that my kid has been reporting the (few & far between!!) ED acceptances of her friends. Thus far, only your DC at UC, Haverford, Pomona, & Georgetown. Lots of deferrals in her friend group.

I honestly wish that ED had been rethought across the board this year. Seems like plenty of kids were not able to make an ED choice, so I hope it doesn't greatly disadvantage students this cycle.

With challenged economic/business models and significant drop in full pay international students, American Universities and colleges are poised for the biggest re-stratification of their enrollment in decades. What about for non-affluent families? DS didn't ED because I told him that means full pay, and we can't commit to that. He got into his first choice EA, the only one we've heard from. Financial info will come separately in January. This school typically provides no merit aid, and FAFSA tells me we have to pay 100%. DS also applied EA to two schools that typically DO provide merit aid to deserving students, but I'm afraid they won't in the COVID environment. So stressful.

In at Macalester, very generous merit aid. DD applied EA.

My DC and I have no idea who your son is fwiw but this is great, congrats (same goes for all of the other acceptances named in this thread- so happy for all of the kids!). I wanted to ask about the APs - only 3 seems very unusual in mcps, especially for a UC caliber applicant. Were your son’s extracurriculars so intense he could not fit in more APs, or did he just choose not to take them? Any background around his course choices would be useful to many of us with younger kids as well, since all one hears is “rigor, rigor” from the counseling office.

Brown deferral kid - got a 15k per year to UPitt. Between them and presumably UMD, that is one solid choice B.

We'll find out in RD if we are buying an Ivy at a modest discount or a state flagship in the bargain basement. Either way we have not lost this race.

How will you know if you can get aid at an Ivy if you’ve not gotten accepted yet? Did you run their net price? How sure are you they are grants not loans or workstudy?

Congrats on merit at Pitt. We got nothing from them despite stellar stats. That’s how it is.

Not applying to schools that do not meet need. Workstudy is great, I hope it is awarded as it is the most straight forward path to working in a lab and publishing. We would need to take out loans to meet our expected family contribution, so more loans on top are not acceptable to our family.

We were rather shocked by Pitt since the letter just arrived. My understanding is that merit at Pitt was awarded long ago, but they turned around and added it just in case.

That is my hope. The public he prefers (currently his second choice, but I hope it leapfrogs to first if he gets in) only offers ED, not EA. So we wait until spring.

The one I know is 4.7w and 1510. Impressive ECs focused on a hook but not a particularly niche one.

The one I know is 4.7w and 1510. Impressive ECs focused on a hook but not a particularly niche one.
