| I am honestly surprised, my DD was also deferred from U Miami. Her stats are far above the average and she has good ECs. Now we are really worried. |
|
It seems schools largely no long hand out rejects anymore, just deferals in their place. Each school sends out many thousands of deferals, knowing they can only possibly take a small percentage from those. Is this part of the culture that just makes people feel good but gives no real benefit? They think people are too fragile to take a college reject.

| Perhaps the deferrals to safety schools or target schools are because they think you are unlikely to attend. Deferrals to riches, I think they are stringing us along, not willing to reject until they see the final batch |
| DD in @ Minnesota, Miami, and Penn State. Merit aid @ each acceptance. |
| DD in at Tulane honors program with half tuition scholarship. Increased to full tuition scholarship for winning one of their top merit awards. Deferred at UVA. Her dad is a UVA alum and, being in AAP then honors and AP classes, etc., we’d envisioned DD getting into UVA “no problem.” In the past few years however the writing has been on the wall that there is no guarantee (at all) and in DD’s case she applied widely. You never know what a particular school might be looking for. DD is very happy and relieved to know where she is going and grateful to Tulane for choosing her - and doing so early enough to allow her to start mapping out her plans for next year. For anyone who is looking ahead to applications for next school year, it may be useful to keep an open mind about where to apply and what your DC has to offer to schools and vice versa. |
My sense is that UMiami is big on yield protection, not admitting someone they're unsure will come. Same happened here, I think my D will take the gamble with RD, though she was feeling a bit of pressure to switch to ED2. Feels like sales to me, need to keep calm. |
Congrats to your DD! DC was accepted EA to Tulane as well. DC has never visited, so we will go in April. Waiting on other RD applications now, but happy to have one good option on the table. |
| ^^Congrats to you and your DD!! |
From our College office - U Miami had a huge number of ED/EA applicants this year. It has become increasingly hard to get into even when grades/scores are a match. They also offer ED2 to deferred candidates from EA. |
Agree. Look at WVU and Frostburg |
Our kid - also deferred at NE but rejected at UMD. NE is a fit based on school/ Naviance but know they get a ton of applications so not surprised. Surprised by UMD rejection (OOS). |
That is wonderful! |
Not familiar w U Miami in particular but there are schools that do yield protection deferrals and if you send them a LOCI and say that you will attend, that deferral magically turns into an acceptance |
| I love how everyone blames "yield protection," which basically says you think the school thinks your kid is too good for them. What a joke. |
Right. Should be blaming their own application strategy. Everyone wants to play the field. Didn’t work this year. |
