Queen of E's funeral fashion

I personally find MM’s clothing interesting and prefer her style over everyone else in the BRF. MM can take fashion risks. Even though sometimes they don’t pay off, it’s so much more refreshing than what the rest of them wear. Kate has been in matronly territory for a while now. Her everyday look is for someone 10+ years older than her. Even her funeral outfit was like something out of Dynasty - very 80s vibe. (She’s worn some great gowns, though). She looks ages older than MM in part because of the way she dresses. And yes, I realize Kate has to have a certain look because of her role, and she always looks nice, but her overall look isn’t very interesting. If she weren’t married to William, I don’t think many people would fawn over her look the way they do now.

Camilla and Sophie generally look put together. Beatrice and Eugenia are getting better but often miss the mark.

Especially the Americans, but plenty of the Brits as well -- people just seem to struggle with the "protocols" while still wanting to wear something eye-catching and interesting and most people fail, to be honest. Like look at Fergie and Beatrice:

Fergie's suit is too tight and totally the wrong shape for her body. Her hat looks silly and small (almost everyone who opts for these little fascinators instead of a proper hat looks silly, IMO, especially at a solemn occasion instead of a wedding). The gloves and sheer hose, which could look classy and traditional if she'd worn a more simple dress in an a-line with less fussiness, instead look twee and unfashionable.

Beatrice does better but her insistence on wearing her hair down looks sloppy -- her hat would look much better if she'd done a smooth updo like her mom. Her outfit is still too fussy for the occasion (lace pleat insets AND gold buttons? come on -- it is a FUNERAL).

Everyone is praising Kate for nailing it, which she did, but also -- it's not that hard! Wear clothes that actually fit and don't make you look like a sausage in a casing. Opt for simple and classic over adorned and complicated. Get your hear done and tame fly-aways. Since you are wearing a hat which is not something women almost every do other than at these events, keep it simple and classic and make sure it is the proper size and shape for your head. Yes, this would be a tall order for a random American, but these people are actual royalty. Whyyyyyy have the not fi
gured it out yet? This assignment was especially easy because (1) you had lots of time to plan, (2) the color scheme was very simple, and (3) no one was going to criticize you for going to plain and simple on this one. And yet so many of them screwed it up. It's amazing.

Beatrice looks just perfect. Lovely dress and beautiful.

Yes to Beatrice looking perfect! And I don’t get the Fergie hate. It is harder to look good on TV than in photos and I thought she looked amazing on-screen. Her hair was flawless and when I first saw her in a shot from the back I assumed it was one of the younger cousins or something. The expectations from PPs like this for how real people should look is insane. These are actual humans who have to put these clothes on, sit through 3 public funeral services in one day, and get in and out of cars and be photographed while doing it. They are not standing backstage being dressed by stylists and leaping onto a catwalk for a 30-second fashion show.

No matter what you want to believe, they do not all have seamstresses like the queen’s knocking out custom outfits on 5 minutes’ notice to perfectly fit their changing bodies. I found it hard to find a flaw in anyone’s outfits and mostly just thought how amazing it was that they didn’t look more rumpled by the end.

I don’t think it’s about having a seamstress on call to knock out a custom outfit. It’s ok to wear something off the rack and find a size the fits. This is how most of the world shops. It doesn’t have to be Stella McCartney or Oscar de la Renta or any other designer to look nice.

All of these people had funeral attire ready to go months ago.

Right. It isn’t as if they didn’t see this coming..

There is no such thing as a stunning dress with a weird neckline. The neckline frames your face, which is the most important thing about a person. When the neckline is screwed, so is the rest.

We aren't running a contest within the BRF, we're evaluating Markle on her own merits against the claimed label of a good dresser.

But yes, come to think of it, I've never seen THAT much skin on Kate, and for that, I'm sincerely grateful.

The rules change constantly though. This is someone whose every move has been scrutinized by the press for the last 4+ years. She looks great most of the time. It's fine you don't like the bust on this one dress. It's fine if you think that one pair of pants was ill-fitting. I disagree but whatever.

The point is, if you can't admit that MM is a fashionable woman who knows how to dress, you are being disingenuous and looking for things to dislike about her. She is a beautiful woman who looks great in clothes and despite being in the public eye and having a veritable army of reporters who have made it their mission in life to catch her looking bad on camera, she still mostly manages to look great. Do you have any freaking idea how hard that would be?

I mean I could sit here and drag up all Kate's missteps from the handful of years before and after she married William -- there were a million of them and she had a lot more goodwill that Meghan gets. But I don't dislike Kate and I'm not petty AF so I won't.

She looked good at the funeral and was appropriate and didn't do a single thing wrong the entire week. It's honestly sad that some of you can't just admit that.

I mean look, Meghan is a beautiful woman, I give you that. I think she often dresses inappropriately, and she, like so many of us, misjudges her size and forgoes foundation garments. It's not a capital sin.

Here is the thing: there are different standards at play for people who CLAIM to be good dressers and people who DON'T. People are forgiving of Kate because she, quite frankly, is NOT fashion forward and does not outwardly ASPIRE to be that way. Meghan, on the other hand, has ambitions to be tasteful and stylish. Therefore, she's scrutinized more and judged more harshly. Like, no one judges the way Eugenie or Beatrice dress because they do not pretend to be stylish.

Oh good lord. First of all, Kate 100% aspires to be fashionable in a "I'm gonna be queen one day" way. She is actively trying to look good and has always sought to use her appearance to boost her public persona AND her clout within the royal family. Don't be naive. She is great at it now but it took her a while to find her stride. Do you not recall the great furor over how much the Queen hated Kate's espadrilles? She's a fashion plate but she's been in the same job for a decade and she's hit her stride.

Eugenie and Beatrice want nothing more than to be considered cool and stylish. It is honestly part of their charm. The love clothes and dressing up and nothing brings them more pleasure than a royal wedding where they can wear something insane on their bodies and their heads and get their picture in the papers. Yes, the want to be stylish and if you don't think they admire Meghan's ability to dress than you are kidding yourself. Meghan is beautiful and knows how to dress.

Nope I disagree with you on Kate. She dresses, most of the time, in a way that 95% of the population would not want to imitate - too conservative, too careful. She dresses well for her job, yes, but no one else has that job. Believe me, no woman her age wants to wear these clothes. She's not a fashion plate at all.

Eugenie and Beatrice have never had anything but a quirky English look. Neither has ever been known for beauty or style, and no one expects it from them.

Meghan is beautiful, yes. In my opinion, her dressing choices are often wrong for her and for the occasion. Recollections vary.

Ok.

Oh interesting, you like the green dress? I think most of your other examples are really good choices of times she looked phenomenal. But that green get up was horrible to me.

Yes what a hag, what does Harry see in her

It's hard to take you seriously when you call a look like this "horrible".

It looks like a flight attendant outfit to me. She is attractive just don’t think the green is one of her better choices.

New PP. This shade of green suits her. She looks nice in emerald and forest as well. I think she works with colors that suit her tone and hair color.

DP. All those pics that I'm not going to quote and repost, they all emphasize just how short she is. She wants to be 6' tall and willowy but she isn't and she hasn't figured out how to dress for her actual height instead of her aspirational height.

I agree that she's interesting in her fashion instead of conservative. But she dresses for the height she wants rather than the height she has.

I think it's good that people have different taste in fashion. I always thought it was weird when people ask "Why doesn't Catherine dress like Crown Princess Mary or Queen Letizia?" Mary and Letizia dress like themselves so why would you want to see the same thing on someone else? I love the way Catherine dresses because it's so far outside of anything I would ever wear that she just feels like royalty to me. I don't think she looks older than Meghan at all, just different.

She is someone who really wears her feelings on her face (makes sense for an actress, actually). She glows when she's with her kids, and when she smiles she really lights up a room. She spent much of her time as a senior royal looking stressed and pained and it often showed on her face.

I do think she's gotten better at hiding things in the last year or so.

Interesting. So you believe that someone who is a) a professional actress, i.e. paid for portraying people she isn't, and b) extremely invested in her public perception, just "wears her feelings on her face" when she has a professional photoshoot? Sort of, come as you are, here I am, unfiltered and unforced? There is no posing involved whatsoever? Interesting.

In other news, I don't know that we've seen much of her "with her kids", outside of baby Archie photos when he was an infant.

I’m the PP you are replying to and yes she’s gorgeous. She always is. I have never called a woman a hag in my entire life and I wouldn’t.

But we are talking about clothes, right? I hate that outfit, yes I think it’s horrible. I actually thought most people agreed on that one. You can like it if you want!

Seriously, this. Meghan is obviously a beautiful woman but that dress is absolutely horrible. She looks like kermit.

If anyone else wore that same outfit, the headlines would scream that she's paying tribute to the Queen!
