The Japanese Emperor abdicated in 2019. |
They don’t seem to be shielded from the media at all, but their media is highly highly curated. |
I'm not the one who wrote any of the posts in this thread, so you're conflating different posters. |
If you didn't write any posts then obviously I'm not talking about you. It's a reference to a post made a few pages ago where someone with a hypocritical bias only takes issue with negatives posts they don't agree with and called those posters "obnoxious". Clearly there's a lot of negativity in this entire thread. |
Yes, that was me. But I'm not the one who posted any of the comments in this particular section. BTW, I followed my earlier post with a clarification that I cringe at potshots by both sides. I assume you didn't see it. |
I saw it but didn't find it very sincere. Sorry. It was a stupid comment in light of all the negative comments that preceded it. |

Just thought I would try to steer the conversation away from all the petty sniping with a reminder of this cute sketch.

No worries. It's shame we can't just have fun in this thread without ugliness. Did you ever watch Joan Rivers' fashion reviews after red carpet events? I've been thinking of it lately when deciding whether I should post something critical. While Rivers enjoyed a sharp joke, she wasn't mean spirited. She and her guests would share their unvarnished opinions about celebrities' style choices, but they never criticized the women's bodies, never insinuated any kind of personal criticism, and never made assumptions about things they couldn't know. If an actress was significantly overweight, they critiqued whether a particular dress was flattering on her figure, but they never passed any judgement on the weight itself, and they didn't avoid critiquing her like she didn't matter because she wasn't Hollywood skinny. Everyone got the same treatment. Rivers always played up her comments with exaggerated expressions for a laugh, so I didn't immediately realize how clearly and respectfully she drew a line between fair and unfair commentary. The BRF are public figures, and they're fair game for vigorous debate. The cheap shots are unnecessary and a distraction. Whew, sorry for the longwinded response. (I actually deleted a lot of it before hitting submit!) |
That was adorable! IIRC, the Queen also did a funny skit for the opening ceremony of the London Olympics. |
The bit she did for the Invictus Games is adorable too! https://www.theguardian.com/uk-news/video/2016/apr/29/president-obama-sends-invictus-games-challenge-to-the-queen-prince-harry-video |
This is so sweet. Is there anything more pure than Paddington Bear? |
| Beautiful celebration. God save the Queen. |

This thread is really showing how ugly some of you guys are. I don’t know why the royals and all conversations about them make some of you so unhinged, but it is quite the spectacle.
I like the royals. I like Kate, I like MM, I like Harry and I like William. They are all imperfect people who came from an imperfect family who have their lives scrutinized daily. I don’t get the adoration and I also don’t get the hate. They’re just people. I came here to see pictures of dresses, hats, cute kids… you guys just made it insufferable. |
+1. Couldn’t agree more, pp. |
Amen. Wish I was there to see it in person. |
