If a coach has 3 teams, is that bad in that they are stretched too thin? We are considering trying out for one of Curtis Wilson's teams.

Don't know the coach or what other roles he has but that would determine if stretched too thin. If just coaching 3 teams and all of them being the top team in NPL then I wouldn't think so. One of the things that tends to stretch coaches too thin is the travel between games. If all at same location and he has good time management and organization skills then it's doable.

Does my kid have any chance of making it if he has not done their U7/U8 program? He has played with another team, but not SYC. How many kids do they usually take? It looks like they will have 3 teams. How many kids show up at tryouts generally? How has the club been for player development?

TIA for an information you might have.

DS's team played against a couple of their teams at U9 and U11 (thank you very much, age-group change making him skip a year). The U9s were overmatched and experimental -- they insisted on having their goalkeeper come out all the way to midfield, and they didn't care if they gave up goals on breakaways. The U11s (this year) are outstanding.

That could mean they have up-and-down years like a lot of smaller clubs, or it could mean the coaching is fantastic.

Similar experience w SYC boys. I think at U9 they were being coached by a parent maybe. Same boys (for the most part) now have a professional coach and the difference is amazing. Unless those are all different kids. Also, in the interim, I believe there was a merger between them and some other club...Not sure really, but the 2006 top boys are excellent.

Politics and nepotism was on blatant display at the final tryout last night. It's not how you play it's who you know.

We were there last night, too. It's our first time at tryouts for any travel club, so we didn't know what to expect. We were surprised to see so many parents approaching the coaches. Are they lobbying for their kids? DS said that the results will be posted online on Thursday.

Yes. Ass-kissing is an art form there. What you don't see is even worse--phone calls, emails behind the scenes.

I come from a time and place that stuff wasn't tolerated and it had the opposite effect--they wouldn't take you if you were a pain in the ass like that.

Arlington is that way in everything--school, sports, etc. You know in real soccer countries--parents aren't allowed anywhere near tryouts and are kept apart from the coaches. The idea of a parent lobbying or pleading or making up fake injuries to get their kid into academies over there is ludicrous, but here it's the way it is done.

I actually disagree about the Arlington politics and nepotism - but only to some extent. I know parents whose kids played up in Travel this year and are now trying out for their age Travel, and I know parents with kids in Arlington's Academy and Advanced Academy. If your kid played Arlington Travel last year, there is a good chance they were ending up on the top 2 fields. If your kid was in Advanced Academy or Academy - there did not seem to be any preference given. And as some have mentioned previously, if your child is a trouble maker / hard to coach - then the Academies worked against you since they already know information about your kid's coachability. Some of the Academies kids played in the top fields, some were moved around a lot (up and down) and many stayed near the lower fields. I think initially, the top field was seeded with some of the bigger players, but by the last tryout, they were testing some smaller (but skilled) players in with that group. I don't necessarily call it nepotism that some of the Travel players were in the top field, for the most part, they are proven skilled players. However, there are some players just as good as the Travel players (but unproven) scattered throughout the 2nd and 3rd fields that were not being moved up.

The Joga SC 2017-18 Academy will be holding Player ID tryouts this weekend, May 13 & 14, at 4 pm at the Gesher School, 4800 Mattie Moore Court in Fairfax.

We are looking to form teams in the following age groups: 2003-2004-2005-2006-2007-2010-2011-2012.

We are all about having players play up if their good enough so if you have a 2008-2009 who is very talented go head and bring him out so we can take a look and evaluate him to possibly play with the 07s.

"Our identity is driven by street soccer and possession football. We look for players who exhibit superior technique, intelligence, creativity and swagger."

"Coaches from Europe will make multiple visits to scout our academy players throughout the year."

"We have contacts with US National Team programs to ensure our players are connected to domestic opportunities through National Training Centers."

"Joga is affiliated with many local and out-of-state universities and as players approach the age of evaluating those universities our staff will assist with the marketing of those players."

The teams will play in EDP, Alexandria Futsal League, Bethesda Cup, Annandale Premier Cup, Jefferson Cup and 1 National event TBD.

Joga Cup international tournament in Holland and Joga international tours are optional.

There will be four practices per week, from August to June.

Any questions contact Hasan Ghaleb at ghalebhasan@yahoo.com or 703-909-4534.

Right. Nothing shady goes on at Arlington travel tryouts. Nothing at all. Lol.

This is the club whose DA director also works for a private, parent run organisation which boasts about how many of it's kids make the DA. Conflict of interest? Nah. Nothing to see here. Move along.

Our Board has little history in the DMV soccer scene and our parent base does not have a lot of soccer knowledge, particularly in development. It's why the people in charge get away with the things they do. Parents are too busy fighting over team placements which filters to the players' attitudes. However, the track record for ignoring lower teams and the environment is why they do it. All the while decisions are being made that are against their own child and the Club's best interest and they have no idea because they aren't paying attention to the right things. Having a DA means nothing for their child's player development. I am hoping one day the people around me will wake up.

Get a grip people. This is U9. If you are so bent out of shape that your unproven Academy little Messi is on some middling field, then go try out at a different club, or just bring some proof come Fall on your player's C or D or E or F?? team, and trust the big club system will recognize that overlooked talent and adjust at next year's tryouts. Stew about it privately all next year if you want, but don't accept an offer and complain about it for the entire next year. Arlington parents so caught up in which color team kids are on at U9. Next it will be parents bellyaching about what # jersey their player gets. It's U9 and 7-8 year olds!

The most neurotic place on the planet. No way in hell would I put a young kid in that environment. They should have jars full of Xanax at the tryout check-in tables.

At the end of the first ID Session, the guy said that the practices will be at Gesher Jewish Day School (I'm not sure how so many teams will practice on one field but that's what he said). He also said they will get space at Soccerplex is the grass field is closed.

The only Soccerplex I that I know of around here is the one in Boyds, MD. You sure that's what he meant?
