Guys, I have to say, my 6YO soccer loving son is doing tryouts for the first time for next year (PPA, FWIW), and this thread really freaks me out. neither DH nor I grew up as athletes so all of these seems way too serious!

Dont listen to some of these posts. From the kids perspective, they are just playing small sided games with some skills assessments for the most part. Will they have fun?...Yes. Do parents worry..yes. It is our children at the end of the day and some parents worry and some dont. Not a big deal.

I understand there's a fourth day to determine which team kids are on - if it is clear a kid will be in the mix do they let anybody know early?

Politics and nepotism was on blatant display at the final tryout last night. It's not how you play it's who you know.

We were there last night, too. It's our first time at tryouts for any travel club, so we didn't know what to expect. We were surprised to see so many parents approaching the coaches. Are they lobbying for their kids? DS said that the results will be posted online on Thursday.

Yes. Ass-kissing is an art form there. What you don't see is even worse--phone calls, emails behind the scenes.

I come from a time and place that stuff wasn't tolerated and it had the opposite effect--they wouldn't take you if you were a pain in the ass like that.

Arlington is that way in everything--school, sports, etc. You know in real soccer countries--parents aren't allowed anywhere near tryouts and are kept apart from the coaches. The idea of a parent lobbying or pleading or making up fake injuries to get their kid into academies over there is ludicrous, but here it's the way it is done.

+1. It should be no surprise because Arlington County is littered with families with parents who are lobbyists. I'm an Arlington Democrat, but I feel that Trump needs to be drain the swamp, and even the Arlington Soccer Association will eventually improve, in this regard. Until then, stay away....

Yeah, this is what he said. Not the MD Soccerplex. My bad. He did not mention cost.

who are these arlington advance players?? so their gunner parents pay some extra money to get their player in a program that does not select on skill, and then some players within that non-selective program get selected out to pay even more money for some advanced "program"? trust me, any U8 program is not going to be advanced (unless truly tryout based like other clubs), and this bitchin' sounds meaningless and who cares but a sterotypical "arlington parent."

so, what, your player does not make the top teams at tryouts and now you go complain to the coach director??!! lol - next time don't be so niave and think you can pay your way through. the rest of us didn't even know there was some special advanced u8 team, and i wonder if instead of complaining, your player should be happy placed on a middle team while the rest of us battle for the bottom because our superstars have never been seen before and surely are being overlooked at tryouts.

pathetic.

SYA has a pretty serious U8 program. Does anyone here have experience with it?

Joga SC is looking to form teams for the 2012's? The 5 year olds?

Just WOW. Are you responding to anyone, or just venting Your own personal issues? I don't recall any Academy parent complaining they paid money and didn't get moved up.

Daughter went to BRYC U15/16 tryouts last week. Is the coach the same guy that pulled his team off the field in the finals of the arlington tournament?

Why did he do that?

Most travel soccer is more laid-back than you'd think from seeing this stuff. It's easy to say "don't worry," and don't beat yourself up if you find yourself worrying. But look at your kid and see if he's having fun. If so ... don't worry.

In a few years, if he looks like a serious prospect to play in college or beyond, then you'll have a few things to consider. But at age 6, just go to PPA and enjoy.

No I assume it's a training program to set themselves up for future years with players.

I heard the ref was blatantly favoring Arlington, as in, giving the head coach high fives when Arlington scored, as well as not calling numerous potentially dangerous fouls on the BRYC players. As it was described to me, I can't blame him for pulling his team. Supposedly there's video of the ref's behavior but it's doubtful that Arlington will do anything since it benefited their club.
