Tonight was the first night of tryouts for Arlington U9s. Do they make all the kids go to all three days, or is there rolling notification? I understand there's a fourth day to determine which team kids are on - if it is clear a kid will be in the mix do they let anybody know early?
Politics and nepotism was on blatant display at the final tryout last night. It's not how you play it's who you know.
We were there last night, too. It's our first time at tryouts for any travel club, so we didn't know what to expect. We were surprised to see so many parents approaching the coaches. Are they lobbying for their kids? DS said that the results will be posted online on Thursday.
Yes. Ass-kissing is an art form there. What you don't see is even worse--phone calls, emails behind the scenes. I come from a time and place that stuff wasn't tolerated and it had the opposite effect--they wouldn't take you if you were a pain in the ass like that. Arlington is that way in everything--school, sports, etc. You know in real soccer countries--parents aren't allowed anywhere near tryouts and are kept apart from the coaches. The idea of a parent lobbying or pleading or making up fake injuries to get their kid into academies over there is ludicrous, but here it's the way it is done.
I actually disagree about the Arlington politics and nepotism - but only to some extent. I know parents whose kids played up in Travel this year and are now trying out for their age Travel, and I know parents with kids in Arlington's Academy and Advanced Academy. If your kid played Arlington Travel last year, there is a good chance they were ending up on the top 2 fields. If your kid was in Advanced Academy or Academy - there did not seem to be any preference given. And as some have mentioned previously, if your child is a trouble maker / hard to coach - then the Academies worked against you since they already know information about your kid's coachability. Some of the Academies kids played in the top fields, some were moved around a lot (up and down) and many stayed near the lower fields. I think initially, the top field was seeded with some of the bigger players, but by the last tryout, they were testing some smaller (but skilled) players in with that group. I don't necessarily call it nepotism that some of the Travel players were in the top field, for the most part, they are proven skilled players. However, there are some players just as good as the Travel players (but unproven) scattered throughout the 2nd and 3rd fields that were not being moved up.
