PP who doesn’t get Madonna. I am of the right age. I wanted to love her music. But I really can’t stand her voice and the music itself is so very basic, especially when you consider what else was happening then…Bangles on the fun side—so talented. Alison Moyet. Sinead O’Connor. Kate Bush. Tracy Chapman. Michelle Shocked. I don’t agree that Taylor Swift’s music shares much genetic material with Madonna’s; I can see the care taken to create iconic images as being influenced by Madonna—more power to both of them—but not the music itself. Your song list above is pretty much an illustration of the worst of 80s pop. |
DP. Eh, you all have the same energy. I agree with the PPs that the obsessed TS haters tend to be the same weirdos who get all worked up about Lizzo’s flute or who freak out about literally anything Megan Markle does. It’s a type. |
Thank you OP. I've been saying this for years. TS always plays the victim and seems like the type that thinks she's always right. I admit she has a couple catchy songs but her personality is a complete turn off for me, and she's not a good singer at all. |
You: Baseless accusation Me: Facts You: [fingers in ears, eyes closed] No, baseless accusation Lizzo is a million times more interesting and exciting as a writer and performer than a Taylor Swift. I don’t care about Meghan Markle either way and can’t imagine what she has to do with anything. |
You’re just salty because you know the description is accurate. |
I don't care how people feel about TS's music, but she came out strong against Tennessee's horrifying Marsha Blackburn: https://embed-testing.usmagazine.com/celebrity-news/news/taylor-swift-endorses-tennessee-democrats-in-rare-political-post/ And I have not idea what her parents' political persuasions are, but gosh, a liberal adult whose parents are way more conservative? That seems like fodder for the "she's not special" file. |
The point is that Taylor Swift is not like some big Democratic booster (disliking Marsha Blackburn notwithstanding -- lots of Dems dislike Bernie Sanders and AOC but that doesn't make them Republicans). It is weird for anyone to associate Taylor Swift with being politically liberal, given that she is not very political at all. Similarly, it's weird to associate DISliking Taylor Swift with hating Megan Markle and Lizzo, as a PP did, indicating that people who dislike Taylor Swift are... racist? Extremely confusing assumption! I think actually what is happening is that some people are so obsessed with Taylor Swift that she represents everything they deem "good" in the world. If they are liberal than Taylor Swift must be the epitome of liberalism. If they are tolerant and inclusive than Taylor Swift must be the most tolerant and inclusive person to walk the earth. I do think this kind of hero worship is part of what makes Taylor Swift annoying, even though it's coming from her fans. It's just behavior. It's okay if you are 14 but not if you are 30, and plenty of Swift fans are 30. |
Let it go, man. Go touch grass. |
You first. |
I see comparison to Lizzo- and Markle-haters was spot on. What you all share is a frothing, deranged hatred, where you just are obsessed with someone you don’t know and will never meet like a starving dog on a bone. It’s weird, man. I wonder where your parents went wrong. |
I agree with you regarding Swift's lack of activism, but I'm not sure I really get why you (and many others) keep referencing selling herself as a victim. There were specific incidents in her career (Kayne West and her masters in particular) where was actually wronged, and those events had a significant impact on her life and career. But beyond the reactions to those, I don't really get what else people are talking about here that she is portraying a victim. |
A. Honestly, when people complain about AOC or any of the other Democrats on the left side of the spectrum, I think about how closely the current "moderate" Dems align with 1970s Republicans. Reagan showed up and turned the Republicans into the party that has cornered the market on racism, anti-feminism, and union-busting. I don't know how any of us can opine on how political Taylor is or is not. When she first started speaking up, she said that when she was a teenager, she focused on music, not politics, but a decade later, she was speaking up. She's not writing protest song after protest song, but in the songs I've heard and the interview snippets I've read, it's pretty clear which way she leans. I'm not sure how overt someone has to be to "be political" in your eyes. |
I’m already over her Midnight promo. It’s annoying and performative. |
I have seen exactly one thing about her new album, and I actually own some TS music, so it's not as though I'm avoiding all things Taylor. It feels like maybe you're going out of your way to see and be annoyed by her. |
You know the Bangles were all Prince, right? The Bangles wouldn't have been anything without him -- he wrote their music, he created them. Just like Sheila E. Not sure how you can compare some of those singers to Madonna -- Tracy Chapman was a one hit wonder. |
