Oh, man. The singing had me sobbing. What a fantastic episode. |
I did not read the book, but from the show I assumed the shortages in Gilead were almost a creation of them not trusting modern technology. There are no food factories, no modern farms, etc. I am loving the Serena storyline. I think she was able to lie to herself up until now, and is slowly realizing that she herself is both the monster and a victim. |
I just needed to post somewhere how much I love the way they are handling the 'love triangle'. It would've been easy for them to add drama by having Nick withold the message from June, but they had him be an honest and upstanding guy who delivered it in full. |
Questions:
-I’m not good at micro-analyzing. I just can’t get a read in Serena. I thought she was finally coming around to june and then boom - “I want you gone after you deliver the baby”. Why? I mean, wasn’t she finally softening up? -Janine and emily are back from the colonies because they were running short of handmaids after the explosion. So where are they? We keep seeing them at the store or on their walks, but do they have an assignment yet or are they just chilling at the red house or whatever the handmaids compound is called. -I need more aunt Lydia! How many episodes are left? I thought we were going to get some of her back story. I want her to start cracking so bad. I HATE how cruel she is to the handmaids, and I don’t think I’ll ever ‘get over’ that cruelty, but I know she’s soft in there somewhere. |
I am LOVING this season now! Serena’s character is getting more complex, and the hot/cold transitions are more fluid and more justified now.
Aunt Lydia: I think she’s like a compassionate drill sergeant who knows she needs to keep the handmaids in line or it will be the end of them, and the end of reproduction. Her care for them is genuine and her acting is so superb, you really feel her compassion (however muddled it may be). She truly believes she’s doing good for the future of humanity. She also deeply loves children and is probably the product of overzealous religious brainwashing. Did anyone cathch her comment about her godson dying when she said “it wasn’t my fault”? That may be hinting at some sort of repentance mentality with her and children. Eden and Nick: why is he such an ass to her? She’s a brainwashed child and she tries so hard at the beginning. It’s heartbreaking to watch her rejection and disillusionment. He couldn’t just fake it a little and be nicer to her? This goes against his character. Further, it’s now looking like she could be a threat, so why is he still being such an ass to her? How hard is it to say the place looks nice? On that note, I’m concerned that eden will hear the commander mention the letters in Canada and eden will know they were Nicks and he’s the one that distributed them. |
+1= I had the same thoughts on all of these points. She is somehow involved in the loss of her godson. I think Nick is cool to Eden because he is a decent person and realizes that she's a child and wants to be as distant as he can. Eden and the 20 year old guard seemed to hit it off a little. I feel badly for Eden- poor thing. |
Maybe Eden hints at blackmailing Nick so he has to out the guardian flirting going on. The end of the season has to come with some upsetting events, it would be disturbing to see Nick fall so far from his “great guy” persona to protect him and June. |
Eden would be grateful for any crumb of affection from Nick. Just a CRUMB.
It's not in anyone's best interest for him not to at least be nice to her ... least of all his. I truly don't understand how someone intelligent enough to be a freaking EYE can't pull it off. |
Husbands in Gilead aren't meant to be loving, affectionate, and kind - he's Eden's boss, not her partner. That's how all good Gilead husbands are - warmth and affection aren't shown. I think he's also disgusted by the whole of it - forced marriage, child marriage, and still being in love with June. None of it adds up as a reason to be "nice" to her. If he's "nice" it'll almost signal that something's awry. |
Yeah, it’s got to feel gross being married to a child. I’m sure there’s some feelings tied to not wanting to lead a young girl on. |
She's 15. He was clear he was not ok with sex with a 15 year old child as an adult. He's a decent guy just trying to survive. |
But saying, "Oh, yellow would be nice on the walls. I like that idea" is hardly the same as ravishing her. |
She's expecting a child, which is expected of her. |
I have no sympathy for Eden. I probably should, but I don’t. |
Huh? Eden is not pregnant. |
