Serena's always thought that she would exempt from the rules one way or another. The restrictions and violence were for other women (who were "bad") but not her. |
I love that episode 6 ended with X-Ray Spex, Oh Bondage! Up Yours! |
idk, the vignettes are beautiful but I don’t think the narrative hangs together.
Among other things, all the American refugees are walking letters. I doubt they would have such an impact, although I appreciate that public opinion winds can change. Also, I didn’t at all buy that they would just be staying in a hotel or that Serena or Nick would be unattended. I think they would be more like the North Koreans when they travel abroad - everyone always in pairs or threes, secure lodgings, etc. |
Today’s episode is so good. Poor Luke. |
Watching Serena get beaten by her husband was horrendous but honestly, I have no problem watching her suffer mentally, as she clearly was while in Canada. She's a monster. |
I recall that (at least in the show's world) Mexico and the UK also had the fertility problem (the Mexican diplomat who talked to June mentioned it and Ruby sold her baby to a UK couple with the implication that the crisis made her pregnancy more valuable). I would think Canada would too.
I do notice that the show is not showing any affects of shortages or economic problems in Canada. Not sure how they reconcile that with Gilead or the colonies but while there are a lot of narrative elements that are not making sense, all the individual vignettes and scenes are exquisite. |
I’m guessing that the rest of “America” okay, meaning the south, midwest, and west coast. Gilead is centered in Boston and controls to the Candadian border. I’m guessing NY, MD, VA, and most importantly DC were bombed out and unlivable.
Obviously Eden and the new guard have a connection, which is going to be a problem for Nick. Next week looks so good. |
+1 Hard to have an iota of sympathy for a woman who's down with ritualized rape and stealing other women's babies. |
I don't think that Atwood did enough worldbuilding when it came to the fertility/economic crisis. The focus of the book was the experiences of the handmaids, not the factors that precipitated Gilead's creation. Since the tv show follows the book very closely, it has the same inconsistencies. |
The first five episodes really made me believe Handmaid’s Tale couldn’t survive the hype beyond the original book. It has become SO GOOD in the last few episodes. Next week’s preview is upsetting but I hope the storyline progresses more. I don’t want anymore focus on the backstory of charecters, just furthering the plot please.
I remember in the season 2 trailer Serena in a resistance scene. Was that the same as the flashback from her speaking engagement at the university or is it yet to come? |
I just rewatched it. That was a flashback. However I don’t think we’ve seen two people drown in a swimming pool yet. |
I also rewatched it, and agree. In terms of the pool, the woman looked tiny, like Eden, but I guess we'll find out soon enough. |
Nick is such an incredibly good guy. |
I love nicks character. I believed him when he said he loved her.
I enjoyed watching people shun Serena. |
Not sure if they will get hung, but I’m betting that relationship will be used to protect Nick if she makes any claims. |
