I am LOVING this season now! Serena’s character is getting more complex, and the hot/cold transitions are more fluid and more justified now. Aunt Lydia: I think she’s like a compassionate drill sergeant who knows she needs to keep the handmaids in line or it will be the end of them, and the end of reproduction. Her care for them is genuine and her acting is so superb, you really feel her compassion (however muddled it may be). She truly believes she’s doing good for the future of humanity. She also deeply loves children and is probably the product of overzealous religious brainwashing. Did anyone cathch her comment about her godson dying when she said “it wasn’t my fault”? That may be hinting at some sort of repentance mentality with her and children. Eden and Nick: why is he such an ass to her? She’s a brainwashed child and she tries so hard at the beginning. It’s heartbreaking to watch her rejection and disillusionment. He couldn’t just fake it a little and be nicer to her? This goes against his character. Further, it’s now looking like she could be a threat, so why is he still being such an ass to her? How hard is it to say the place looks nice? On that note, I’m concerned that eden will hear the commander mention the letters in Canada and eden will know they were Nicks and he’s the one that distributed them.
+1= I had the same thoughts on all of these points. She is somehow involved in the loss of her godson. I think Nick is cool to Eden because he is a decent person and realizes that she's a child and wants to be as distant as he can. Eden and the 20 year old guard seemed to hit it off a little. I feel badly for Eden- poor thing.
