How many of you cut off your MAGA relatives?

Anonymous
I stopped talking to my MAGA relatives because they were insufferable even before "MAGA". It attacts a certain kind of disgusting and willfully ignorant personality.

That’s not always the case. My parents are truly good people and intelligent. I have may competing theories on why they are sucked into this but I won’t cut them off entirely.

I actually have no family members that are MAGA or even republicans.
However, co-workers I was friendly with and have socialized with are now out of my life.
No interest in anything more than being someone I know.

I know you mean well but this is a very good example of privilege. My children are biracial so no I will not have them around family members who lie and say Jan 6 was BLM and antifa or that the proud boys and unite the right rally are good things. You dont love me or my partner or children if you support politicians/polices/lies that threaten their safety and deny them basic humanity. This is not an intellectual exercise for many people. These are our lives.

DP. My children are also biracial and the URM side of the family is MAGA (or at least Trump voters), largely due to religious beliefs.

Never had anything said or done that threatens their safety or denied their basic humanity.

YMMV

Are you the white parent? As a biracial woman myself, trust me when I tell you, your children have a different racial experience than you. They feel and notice things that you do not, that you cannot. And a time will likely come where they inform you that they have absolutely experienced racism from your MAGA family. And they will spend lots of money on therapy coming to terms with the fact that their own parent cared more about keeping the peace with these people than protecting them.

PP said it was the URM side of the family who is MAGA. PP says it’s based on religious beliefs so you can guess which URM they are talking about. So no the MAGA side isn’t being racist, they are the URMs!

+1000

Just stop with the myth of MAGA is racist. Tons of BIPOC people voted for trump. Latinx people voted for trump. Even LGTBQIA++ people support trump.

Trump had more black voters this time than any republican in the last 30 years. This concept that he does not welcome or appeal to minorities is not supported by the data.

More of few is still not much. Most people of color vote against Republicans, just as they did for Trump. And the reason for that is the known racism that underlies their policies and is prevalent in their rhetoric. Anyone voting for this and pretending it has nothing to do with racism is a disingenuous liar.

But but but we were told by a previous poster that Republicans aren't racist at all! https://www.politico.com/news/2025/10/14/private-chat-among-young-gop-club-members-00592146

And we’ve been told repeatedly that the campus protesters are just advocating for peace in the ME, but Students for Justice in Palestine just tweeted “Death to all collaborators”.

Does that mean that all the keffiyeh kids are terrorists?

Let’s be consistent, shall we?

It starts from the top so start there . . . acknowledge the hateful, violent, racist, nasty sh-- that comes from trump (and others in MAGA and in his administration). No one on the right has done that yet and you have no credibility until you do.

“You”? I’m not a Trumper. Despise him.

But don’t despise those who voted for him.

That distinction is the crux of this thread.

I think the best path forward is to understand and win over enough Trump voters to win future elections. And I don’t believe that shunning will accomplish that.

Others here apparently disagree and feel that their unambiguous and uncompromising moral certitude, righteousness and condescension will magically make things better.

I disagree.

+1 so very true

Well, Wise Ones, please explain how to deprogram the MAGA cult and all the people who believe the propaganda of the GOP. We are waiting.

Understand, persuade, compromise, divide/conquer, etc., etc.

In other words, politic effectively.

Shunning/ranting/despising and otherwise vomiting negative emotions while wearing the mantle of self-righteousness? Don’t think that’s likely to accomplish much—Trump has already cornered that market.

You're quite the peach! They're probably very glad to not have to interact with your arrogance.

And unfortunately they are going to find out, along with the Hispanic and Asian Trump voters, that it wasn't a good idea.

If your family isn't white or wasn't in the United States before the Civil War, the masterminds behind the current Trump administration don't want you here. They have stated this in public.

I am a non-white immigrant and my family feels more welcome here in US than ever before. I don't know who are you referring to as "they", but me and my children were very welcome here. Absolutely no regret for voting for Trump.

For your sake, I hope that stays the same pp.

Vance has already stated that "heritage Americans" are preferred. My maga family members agree and are heartedly behind any non white immigrants leaving / being deported.

I've cut my 80 year old MAGA parents off. I've only spoken to them once since January.

-My husband is a life-long, high ranking fed and yet they will tell anyone who listens that the feds are a swamp that needs to be drained, etc.
-They constantly send us typed out missives about their Christian faith with the general theme that we're not Christian enough and are going to hell. Despite the fact that we're actually Christians, attend church weekly, etc. And yet they fully support Trump, ICE, etc--all of which are the opposite of everything Jesus Christ is or stands for.

I can't deal so frankly they can die alone. My brother (only sibling) feels the same way as he is more liberal than I am.
It truly is a cult--my parents have put Trump
above a relationship with their own kids.

It is supported if you look at recent polling. They were duped into voting for a liar.

They did not do a very good job if they wanted me to approve of putting a pussy-grabbing con artist billionaire in power over my children.

I blame MAGA for the fall of our democracy. So it’s a hard pass on remaining friends and hanging out as if they’re not cheering along while watching our democracy crumble. I also have zero respect for their total ignorance as the whole world sees what’s going on but they are willfully blind.
